Postdoctoral Award
The Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park on Hornby Island, B.C., is offering a Postdoctoral Award, aimed at early career researchers anywhere in the world. The Postdoctoral Awards offer $7,000 CAD (roughly $5,000 USD or £3,750) to support research leading to one or more publications on any subject relating to art and knowledge. Funds may be used to support research or publication expenses (e.g. travel, archival work, research assistance, image permissions, and open-access fees).
Eligibility and Requirements
o Postdoctoral Awards are open to applicants from any academic discipline in the Humanities or Sciences, working on the subject of art and knowledge (see below).
o For the purposes of this application, applicants pursuing a PhD through artistic research are not eligible (however, you may wish to look at our website for other opportunities).
o You are EITHER a graduate student in the latter stages of your PhD degree OR you have submitted your PhD thesis within three years of the application deadline.
o If you do not meet the three years requirement but think we should consider your application due to a reasonable break from academia (for instance, due to illness or parental leave), briefly note this when you apply.
o The JRSP must be acknowledged in all publications resulting from the Award.
o The JRSP requires copies of any published material to be submitted to its archive and a license for internal educational use.
o You may be required to present your research in person at the Company of Ideas Forum, which will take place at the Sculpture Park on Hornby Island BC Canada annually, typically in June. All travel expenses will be covered.
Art and Knowledge
We are interested in research that investigates the relationship between art and knowledge. ‘Art’ is conceived of broadly, to include visual art, literature, theatre, music, film, crafts and other fields. The approaches we fund includes but is not limited to:
o Comparing artistic knowledge to knowledge created by other intellectual endeavors
o Art historical, sociological or anthropological accounts of the relationship between the arts and other fields of knowledge, whether in remote or in recent contexts
o The history of art and science
o Psychological, evolutionary or empirical studies of artistic or aesthetic cognition
o The philosophical study of art’s epistemic value, within any philosophical tradition
o Using artistic means or collaboration with artists to break new ground in technology or in any other field of knowledge
o Critical inquiry into the ideological conditions under which artistic knowledge is produced
We are particularly interested in hearing from researchers who can communicate with scholars outside of their narrow area of expertise, or who are breaking new ground in their discipline.
To apply
Applicants should submit the following as a single PDF:
o their academic career so far;
o how their research relates to the topic of art and knowledge;
o their plans for the publication(s) that will result from this research, including the planned journal or another venue for its publication;
Academic CV A writing sample of no more than 10,000 words (this can be an excerpt from a doctoral dissertation, a work in progress, or a recent publication). Name and contact details of one referee. We will only require a reference for the shortlisted candidates, and we will be in touch with you before we contact your referee.
Applications should be submitted to admin@rubinoffsculpturepark.org by Dec 1 2026, 23:59 Pacific Time with the subject “Postdoctoral Award Application”. Applications without this subject or that contain multiple PDFs may not be considered.
Decisions will be communicated by late February 2027; funds will be disbursed upon acceptance of Award terms.
