Deadline: Sat, January 30th, 2027
Cross-Sensory Pedagogy in the Arts is an edited volume exploring innovative approaches to teaching and learning that engage the senses as integral components of artistic experience, interpretation, and knowledge production. Moving beyond the traditional emphasis on visual perception, the volume will examine how smell, taste, touch, sound, movement, and embodied experience can transform arts education across disciplines, educational settings, and cultural contexts.
We invite contributions from artists, educators, art historians, designers, researchers, and scholars working at the intersections of sensory studies, art practice, pedagogy, and interdisciplinary learning. Contributions may address theoretical frameworks, classroom experiments, experiential assignments, case studies, creative methodologies, or reflective accounts of teaching practices that activate multiple senses in the learning process.
Potential topics include:
Multisensory approaches to art history: Engaging sensory experience to deepen the interpretation of artworks, artistic movements, and cultural histories.
Olfactory pedagogy: Using scent, fragrance, and smell as tools for critical inquiry, embodied learning, and artistic interpretation.
Tactile and material learning: Exploring touch, textiles, making, and material engagement as forms of knowledge.
Sound, movement, and spatial experience: Integrating auditory, kinesthetic, and environmental approaches into arts education.
Cross-disciplinary teaching: Connecting the visual arts with literature, science, design, anthropology, performance, and sensory studies.
Accessibility and inclusive pedagogy: Developing sensory approaches that expand participation and challenge the dominance of vision in arts education.
Technology and sensory innovation: Examining digital media, interactive environments, and emerging tools for multisensory learning.
Assessment and research: Investigating how cross-sensory experiences influence student engagement, interpretation, critical thinking, creativity, and retention.
We are particularly interested in contributions that combine conceptual inquiry with practical teaching strategies, including exercises, assignments, workshop formats, and documented classroom experiences. Both established methodologies and experimental approaches are welcome.
By bringing together diverse perspectives and practices, Cross-Sensory Pedagogy in the Arts seeks to advance a broader understanding of how sensory engagement can enrich arts education, foster creative thinking, and open new pathways for embodied, participatory, and inclusive learning.
We invite prospective contributors to submit a brief abstract outlining their proposed chapter, its central argument or pedagogical approach, and its relevance to cross-sensory teaching and learning in the arts.
