Explore the French region of Burgundy through art history and drawing. Students will be lodged in the 13th century fortified castle of Ratilly in the Burgundian countryside, which will also serve as the classroom base. Visits to archaeological sites and medieval architectural monuments provide the opportunity to study medieval construction techniques. Approximately half of the class time is devoted to drawing the urban and rural landscape. Drawing exercises will also inform the study of building construction and materials. Art History Faculty Ellen Shortell is Professor of Art History and Chair of the Critical Studies Department at MassArt. Studio Faculty Martin Mugar is an artist whose work has been exhibited at the Creiger-Dane Gallery in Boston, Rising Tide Gallery in Provincetown and Bowery Gallery in NYC.
