Mid-Atlantic New Painting Biennial

Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: University of Mary Washington
Deadline: Wed, May 15th, 2024

UMW Galleries is now accepting submissions for the juried biennial exhibition, 2024 Mid-Atlantic New Painting. Begun in 1997, MANP is celebrating its twelfth exhibition of contemporary painting organized by the University of Mary Washington. Guest juror Heather Hakimzadeh, senior curator and special projects manager at Virginia MOCA, will select winners for three Juror Awards ($1000, $500, $250). One artwork will be selected for the Purchase Award, to be added to the UMW Galleries Permanent Collection.

The intention of Mid-Atlantic New Painting is to highlight new developments in painting within our region. Artists may submit up to three artworks for consideration. Entries can be any material or medium, with a physical limit of 80” in any dimension. Entries must have been completed within two years of the application deadline (no earlier than May 2022). Works must be suitable for hanging. Unframed work is acceptable if it is submitted with hanging instructions, special hardware, etc.. A $25 non-refundable fee must accompany the entry.

Submit payment and all application materials no later than Friday, May 15, at 11:59pm. Applications are accepted via CAFÉ: https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=13285

Artists will be notified of acceptance by June 10. Accepted artworks are due to the gallery by October 17, and the exhibition will run from November 7, 2024, to January 19, 2025. Awards will be announced at the opening reception on November 7.

Artists are responsible for round trip transportation of accepted works. Works may be hand-delivered or shipped prepaid with a return shipping label included in the package. Shipping and labeling instructions will be detailed in the acceptance email. Shipped works will be returned in the same packaging materials in which they arrive, thus shipping containers should be sturdy enough for the return trip. Hand-delivered works must be wrapped or boxed for protection.

This exhibition and awards are made possible by the generosity of Alfred Levitt. Levitt was a New York artist and intellectual with an abiding interest in encouraging painters.
