STNDRD: Open Call

Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: STNDRD Exhibitions
Deadline: Sat, May 29th, 2027

STNDRD Exhibitions presents a program of exhibitions, interventions, and projects that emerge from alternative sites, informed by the cultural, historical, and architectural contexts in which they unfold.

STNDRD is accepting proposals for its flagship program in Granite City, Illinois, inviting artists and cultural producers to explore the power and potential of flags through both historical and contemporary contexts, considering them as cultural objects that abstract, encapsulate, and canonize. Proposals will be reviewed for inclusion in the 2027 program. Programs run for roughly six to eight weeks.

Proposals to STNDRD should respond to the site: a 15’ flagpole that resides outdoors and on the campus of the Granite City Art and Design District (GCADD). The flagpole is framed by surrounding grounds and its placement within a landscape environment created by landscape architect Chris Carl. Beyond the immediate features and identity of the site, artists may elect to respond to Granite City as a site that sits across the Mississippi River from downtown St. Louis and is part of the greater metro area. Granite City is a historically white and working-class steel town. This industrial legacy continues today and informs the urban landscape of Granite City.

STNDRD welcomes proposals that explore traditional and experimental forms of flag-making, and we especially encourage proposals that consider the concept of a flag as one that is open to interpretation, and/or the flagpole as a prompt that is open to interpretation as a site. We also encourage proposals that integrate, or rely upon, the surrounding grounds.

STNDRD encourages applications from artists from all backgrounds, including underrepresented groups that include (but are not limited to) artists of color, LGBTQ artists, women artists, non-binary, transgender and gender nonconforming artists, and artists with disabilities.

Application materials must be received by May 29, 2026. Please submit proposals or questions by email: contact@stndrd.org
