NOVOHISPANIC ARTS INSTRUCTIONAL RESIDENCIES: PAINTING, SCULPTURE, ARCHITECTURE, OR GRAPHIC ARTS
Each program is offered at a term of 3 weeks and includes a 27-hour course of the chosen focus. Courses are taught by a master artist and art restorer, connecting the residency experience with one of Mexico’s most important art museums, in Puebla’s majestic central historic district. Instruction is in Spanish or English.
 
Each program focuses in a specific area of expertise, providing different content from the techniques to the reading materials that accompany the residency, as follows:
• Novohispanic Graphic Arts Instructional Residency includes pintaderas (clay stamps), antique embossing in fabric or paper, printmaking clichés, as well as basic principles of bookmaking and codex structure.
• Novohispanic Painting Instructional Residency includes traditional organic primers (cactus and lime, rabbit glue, gelatin) stuccos, egg temperas and frescoes with mineral and natural pigments, as well as principles of Viceregal painting techniques.
• Novohispanic Sculpture Instructional Residency includes the famous Pasta de Caña de Maiz (corn stalk paste) Pre-Columbian sculpting technique, use of traditional organic bonding agents, and the principles of baroque polychrome sculpture.
• Novohispanic Architecture Instructional Residency includes principles of pre-Columbian mural painting and baroque frescoes, as well as stuccos and other baroque architectural decorative detailing such as tiling.

ARQUETOPIA
Founded in 2009, Arquetopia is an internationally established, award-winning nonprofit arts and cultural foundation with a social scope that emphasizes critical thinking through artistic practices. Our Artist-in-Residence Programs are the largest and most reputable in Mexico and Latin America, with an array of contents anchored in a solid structure of collaborations with prominent cultural  institutions, renowned experts, and notable artists.

ARQUETOPIA PUEBLA

A spectacular, four-story 1939 Mexican Colonial California-style compound conveniently located in Puebla’s central historic district and close to the city square accommodates the offices, residency space for up to 12 artists-in-residence, and numerous production spaces of Arquetopia. The residency offers a large, natural-light studio; a darkroom; a printmaking studio, a ceramics firing facility with a medium-sized gas kiln; a natural pigments laboratory; ten furnished bedrooms; a large dining room; an open-access kitchen; furnished outdoor terraces and viewing decks; a small botanical garden; a research library; and a rooftop lounge with panoramic views of the city.

PUEBLA, SOUTHERN MEXICO

Accessible via two international airports in Puebla (PBC) and Mexico City (MEX), Puebla is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that lies 136 km (84 mi) from Mexico City and has approximately 5,000 colonial buildings. With a population of 2.7 million, Puebla is famous for a deep cultural identity, delicious cuisine, and ceramics. Puebla has a mild climate year-round.

WHAT THIS RESIDENCY INCLUDES
Technique Instruction:
•27 hours master instruction (9 hours per week)
Staff Support:
•Each resident meets weekly with our staff for individualized research assistance/resources, project guidance, and critiques
Accommodation and Meals:
•Furnished, private bedroom
•Meals and 24-hour access to stocked kitchen and dining room
•Wireless Internet
•Use of Arquetopia’s residency spaces including 4th-floor lounge and outdoor terraces
•Shared bathrooms with modern fixtures and showers
•Housekeeping
Studio Workspace and Materials:
•24-hour access to large and bright, shared art studio with generous natural light
•Personal workspace with large table and wall space
•Access to special facilities (such as our partnered museums and studios) provided
•Materials and supplies for the instructional course provided
•Materials and supplies for additional project production are not included but are available for purchase locally

RESIDENCY FEE AND DATES
Term Length: 3 weeks during Fall or Winter 2017, with option to extend for 1 to 9 more weeks as a self-directed Art Production Residency. Applicants nominate their own range of dates.
Fee: USD $665 per week. Optional Art Production Residency extension USD $495 per week.
