Solid Gone will bring together a diverse group of fragile, ephemeral or precarious works that use cast iron. The exhibition will bring together gallery based works whose creation concentrates on the moment of exhibition, rather than posterity or potential longevity and collectability.
Ben comments that he’s allergic to inert and boring lumps of metal… Challenging, fragile and temporary works are widespread within the non-cast iron art world, this exhibition and catalogue (tbc) sets out to ask and possibly answer: “Are there high quality impermanent, fragile and precarious object based art works being made within the iron casting community that are simply not being seen?”
All the accepted works will need to be made from or include cast iron, in addition all works included will have to reference, involve or be fragile, ephemeral or precarious whether metaphorically or directly. Performative works may be submitted, but please note that performative casting does not fall within the exhibition’s remit. Similarly, with performance or relics of performance, please note the duration of the exhibition and plan the exhibited format accordingly.
CURATOR: Ben Woodeson
Known for playful, precarious and sometimes dangerous sculptures, British artist Ben Woodeson experiments, developing artworks that tease and challenge. He investigates the physical and psychological qualities of materials through a process of trial and frequent error. How can basic rules of physics be exploited to assemble simple sculptures that straddle a line between stability and instability, action and inaction? Woodeson works by testing, using himself as human litmus paper; seeking a balance point between trepidation and attraction.
Woodeson has exhibited extensively in the United Kingdom, Europe, North America and Japan. Recent exhibitions include Midway Between Immortality and Certain Death at The Roswell Museum and Art Center (2017), the Juried Exhibition at The National Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art & Practices (2017), Tick|Tock|Rifts at The Pitch Project (2017), All Change at William Bennington Gallery (2016), The London Open at The Whitechapel Gallery (2015), Obstacle at Berloni Gallery (2015), Twelve-Fisted Boxing Caterpillar: Jack Bilbo & Ben Woodeson at England & Co (2014), Hackney Wick Takeover at the Victoria & Albert Museum (2014) and The World Turned Upside Down at The Mead Gallery (2013).
His work has been reviewed or featured in a wide variety of publications including Elephant, GQ, Time Out (London), Art Monthly, Art Review, Creative Review, Der Spiegel and others.
In 2017, he was a recipient of the Roswell Artist in Residence Fellowship and in 2013 he was awarded the Theodore Randall International Chair in Sculpture Fellowship at Alfred University, NY. He has curated and selected a number of exhibitions including The Nottingham Castle Open (2015) and Morphisisation (2014) at The APT Gallery in London.
Born and raised in London, England, Woodeson studied at Glasgow School of Art in Scotland and has taught extensively at art schools in the UK and Americas. He is the grandson of the German Jewish artist Jack Bilbo.

Entries must be received no later than midnight EST on Sunday, February 18, 2018 Eastern Standard Time. Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.

Images of the works will be the primary selection method, but an image list and a 150-word artist’s statement should also be submitted. In the event of your application being successful, the artist’s statement or excerpts thereof will be printed in the exhibition catalogue along with an image of the work. A CV can also be submitted, but this is optional and will only be consulted during the final stages of the selection process. Please include your web site address where applicable.
All entries must be named with artist’s last name (underscore) first name (underscore) image number. Please ensure that the image number matches the image list.
The images should be in HIGH QUALITY JPEG format. Images should be no smaller than 1200 pixels in any direction (about 13”) and a resolution of 72 ppi. Be sure you are sending the images at the correct size AND that your email software does not automatically downsize the images when sending. Successful applicants will be asked to provide a 300 DPI image for the catalogue.

Artists are responsible for the delivery and collection of their work. Delivery and collection dates will be confirmed by email to accepted artists. Works can be delivered and collected in person or by shipping companies only on pre-set dates. The artists assume full responsibility for the cost, safe packing and safe transport of their works. Please use sturdy, reusable packaging.

All accepted works must arrive ready to exhibit. Two-dimensional works should include whatever hanging or physical attachments methods are needed. Three-dimensional works must include specific instructions for assembly or display.
