The Gallery Aferro Studio Residency program has been running for more than 10 years in downtown Newark. Gallery Aferro’s resident alumni now number more than 100 and include Fulbright scholars, Eyebeam alumni and a wonderful cross-section of contemporary practice by different generations of artists. The residency is a 6 month rotation with the possibility for renewal which many keyholders end up doing. The studio requires a monthly fee of $275. Spaces are 600-1000 sq ft with high ceilings, and include built-out storage/shelving.

As an artist-led presenting and workspace organization we care about art, ideas, and access. Studio residents work in the evocative architectural and social context of a 100+ year old re-purposed building, home to our gallery spaces, permanent installations, a 2000+ volume community book room, and a tool shop. The city of Newark’s long histories of cultural and activist activity up to the present day also present a unique context.

Participation in the residency program includes a platform to share and participate in a community of artists and others through informal networking and participation in twice-annual open studios and artist talks at the gallery. Gallery Aferro is also dedicated to providing opportunities to our residents in the form of visiting curators, solo exhibitions, on- and off-site talks, advocacy, preferential access to professional development programs and commission opportunities, and letters of recommendation. The gallery is located just 5 blocks from Newark Penn Station (connection to MTA, PATH, NJ Transit, Amtrak) and is walking distance to almost every other gallery in the city as well as a wide range of local businesses and places to eat. This call is open to individual artists and artist collectives working in any media, including writers.

HOW TO APPLY Submit via email to: submit@aferro.org Subject Line: “Last Name, First Name – Residency” (Example: Smith, Jane – Residency) Only send submissions as attachments (i.e. .doc, .pdf, google drive files, .jpgs, .png, etc. Do not send us oversized files like .tiff, .psd, or word docs from Pages) Every submissions/proposal must include: 1) CV/Resume 2) Artist Statement 3) Project Statement: Briefly describe projects you would like to focus on during your residency 4) Narrative Bio, third person (‘Smith is an artist who…”) of apprx. 150-250 words 5) Work Samples: up to 10 examples of work to be shown with us (approx.1 mb images, clearly labeled youtube links, etc. Also include full information pertaining to each work sample including Artist’s name, work title, media, dimensions, edition, price, and/or any other relevant information)
