Posted by: Denver Art Museum - Mayer Center
Deadline: Fri, May 4th, 2018

The Denver Art Museum announces a search for a Pre-Columbian Pre/Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellowship position funded by the Frederick and Jan Mayer Center for Pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial Art (mayercenter.denverartmuseum.org) at the Denver Art Museum. The fellowship provides emerging scholars the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the scope of curatorial work within an encyclopedic museum context and pursue research projects related to the museum’s collection. During their tenure, the fellow will develop a permanent-collection based exhibition that will be presented at the Museo de las Americas in Denver, Colorado.

The Mayer Center, in association with Denver Art Museum’s New World department, is dedicated to increasing awareness and promoting scholarship in the fields of pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial art. The Mayer Center fellowship fosters learning and study through the New World collections of the Denver Art Museum.

The Museo de Las Americas (museo.org) was founded in 1991 as a museum with a mission to educate the Denver Community about the diversity of Latino art and culture. The Museo focuses on exhibitions that blend the contextual depth of the past with vibrant new viewpoints of emerging artists from across Latin America addressing social issues of relevance to the Latino community. By presenting quality exhibition and educational programs, the Museo has become a strong voice in the cultural fabric of the region.

Terms

The fellowship begins October 1, 2018 with a term of up to two years—one full year and upon review a second year extension. The Mayer fellow is expected to work full time, a 40-hour work week. Fellows will receive a stipend up to $45,000 per year depending on degree held, and a comprehensive benefits package. Denver Art Museum is committed to promoting diversity and inclusivity within a collegial and collaborative working environment.

Eligibility

Candidates must either hold a doctoral degree (or international equivalent) in art history or archaeology conferred within five years of start date of the fellowship, or be within one year of graduation. Applicants should have strong language skills including Spanish.

Projects

The fellow will assist curators in researching the collection in preparation for upcoming exhibitions as well as the re-installation of the permanent collection galleries, which are scheduled to open in 2021. This includes contributing to new scholarship on the collection, conducting provenance research, and participating in outreach and public programs both in the gallery and online. During their tenure, the fellow will develop an exhibition that will be installed at the Museo de las Américas, due to the North Building project (https://denverartmuseum.org/north).
