Michigan Emerging Graduate Artists 2018

Type: Exhibition Opportunities [View all]
Posted by: Kendall College of Art and Design
Deadline: Sun, June 17th, 2018

Michigan Emerging Graduate Artists (MEGA) is an annual juried exhibition of works by artists who are currently enrolled in graduate level study or are current-year graduates of an undergraduate program at one of Michigan’s academic institutions. MEGA is organized by the Kendall College of Art and Design graduate student association, the Masters Student Collective (MSC). The 2018 exhibition will be presented at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) in Grand Rapids, MI.

MEGA offers the opportunity to showcase two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and site-responsive or installation-based projects. Proposed projects may activate specific spaces within the galleries, but there is no requirement for works to respond to the site. Applicants with site-specific works are encouraged to submit proposals for multiple exhibition locations. All graduate students and graduating undergraduate seniors in the state of Michigan are invited to apply.

The MEGA 2018 artists have a unique opportunity of showing their work concurrently with ArtPrize 10, which attracts over 500,000 visitors to the Grand Rapids area every year. Art professionals from across the United States, including the National Council for Arts Administrators, will have the opportunity to view this year’s MEGA participants.

JURORS

California-born (1974) and London, England raised, Artist Matthew Eaton is an abstract painter who explores themes of nostalgia, nature and place using methods and materials common to graffiti, graphic design and typography. Eaton’s work has been exhibited in galleries, auctions and private collections around the globe. Eaton was a founding partner in art galleries Library Street Collective and Contra Projects in Detroit. Currently Eaton is the Director and Curator of Red Bull House of Art and owner of Uncommon Editions, both also in Detroit. Eaton considers himself a full time arts advocate working to highlight the importance of arts and culture in everyday life.

Shelley N. Stevens graduated as valedictorian of Kendall College of Art and Design in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (with a concentration in Painting and Art History), and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree with highest honors in 2004.  She also studied photography and art history at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, England.  Her large-scale figurative work has been seen in numerous solo exhibitions and has received awards at juried regional and national exhibitions.  Several of her paintings were included in a television documentary titled Re-Enchantment produced by the Australia Broadcasting Network and released in 2011.  Shelley has taught both advanced painting and drawing in the art department of Central Michigan University and works from her studio in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan.  Shelley is the Director of Golden Apple Art Residency in Downeast Maine, a residency program which accommodates multiple artists-in-residence from all over the United States.  You can read more about this project and view more of Shelley’s current work at www.goldenapplestudio.com
