 Call for Proposals

ISSS SURREALISMS 2021

Worldwide Virtual Conference Event

Nuits blanches: Noches en Blanco: Around the Clock

11-14 November 2021

Proposals due 15 August 2021

Notification by 15 September 2021

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ISSS remains committed to its mission of establishing, maintaining, and expanding connections and networks of surrealism scholars, writers, and artists around the world and across disciplines and languages. Because of the continuous uncertainty caused by the pandemic, the annual ISSS conference will take place virtually in November 2021 (the Paris ISSS conference will take place instead in Fall 2022, in person). Taking advantage of the virtual format, we envision a hybrid-virtual, polycentric, and multilayered conference, flexible enough to accommodate rapidly changing local conditions, but also coordinated so that we can continue strong with the ISSS spirit of international dialogues and collaborations.

The ISSS will thus hold Surrealisms 2021 as a series of interlocking, time-zone specific, local conferences that will converge virtually as an all-day/all-night online conference marathon. Local centers of activity are encouraged to coordinate in-person local meetings and activities as well if the local conditions allow. True to the spirit of surrealism as a world movement without a single locus but with many local centers amplifying the message of collective activity “sans frontières,” Surrealisms 2021 calls upon the international membership of the ISSS for local action and global reach.

The ISSS program committee invites proposals from individuals and groups/organizations (whether formally or informally constituted) for this global event, which will take place online, around the world, and around the clock-- across time zones-- from 12:00 GMT on 11/11/2021 to 12:00 GMT on 11/14/2021. We are seeking proposals of two different kinds:

A) Local cluster hosts

We invite proposals for local cluster hosts who will organize and be responsible for small, public or semi-public conference events within their time zone, who will coordinate with ISSS and the other local participants on creating a hybrid virtual-in person event, and thus work in tandem to create Surrealisms 2021. Any in-person events will be the responsibility of the local host. (NB: Hosting an in-person event is not required for participation in the Worldwide Virtual Conference; see below).

The responsibilities of the local host will include:

● Coordinating the virtual event in their time zone, in collaboration with ISSS

● Communicating and coordinating with the ISSS Conference Committee

● Depending on local conditions, arranging for an actual meeting of the local group in addition to the virtual event

● Overseeing logistics for all the above

Please send a proposal to surrealisms2021@gmail.com no later than 15 August 2021. Proposals should include:

● Name, affiliation, time zone

● Estimate of your local reach – i.e. city-wide, country-wide, time-zone-wide

● Description of institutional support you might get to help with logistics, technology, or other expenses.

● Proposal for specific virtual and possibly non-virtual conference-related events: panels, round tables, discussions, exhibitions, performances, etc.

B) Individual panels, seminars, working sessions, and presentations

The Surrealisms 2021 virtual worldwide conference will feature academic sessions and roundtables, as well as other online events such as workshops, readings, and film screenings. As per our mission, the International Society for the Study of Surrealism (ISSS) aims to facilitate cross-disciplinary and inter-regional exchange by organizing events and facilitating channels of information worldwide. We seek to foster exchanges between practicing artists, writers, surrealists, and the scholarly community for whom surrealism (past and present) is a field of ongoing inquiry. The ISSS program committee invites proposals for panels, seminars, working sessions, presentations, and other alternative events.

Proposals for individual presentations (20 minutes) must include an abstract of 250 words, a title, professional affiliation (if applicable), email and postal address, and a short bio of the presenter.

We strongly encourage proposals for pre-organized panels consisting of 3-4 papers; these proposals must include a supplementary paragraph explaining the panel’s rationale with a title. Roundtables and other alternative formats are also welcome. We warmly encourage proposals from graduate students who work on topics related to surrealism, as well as from independent artists, filmmakers, poets, and writers interested to present their work in a scholarly context. Presentations may be given in French, Spanish, or English.

Events may include, but are not limited to:

● Traditional scholarly panels of 3-4 individual or coauthored presentations

● Roundtable discussions

● Panels with short presentations (5-10 min. each)

● Workshops on new collaborative projects

● Media-based creative work

● Other formats welcome

The events should be LIVE to take place over Zoom during the three-day conference marathon. Individual panels/presentations will be placed in contact with local cluster hosts, as possible, for the coordination of additional programming.

Please send a proposal to surrealisms2021@gmail.com no later than 15 August 2021. Proposals should include:

● Title of your proposed virtual event.

● Names, emails, and affiliations of leaders and/or known participants (note that all participants/audience members must be active ISSS members; if your event is selected by ISSS, we can circulate your CFP to members if that is desirable)

● Short description and rationale of the event (250-300 words)

● Language or languages of proposed event

● Time zones of the participants

Proposals will be peer-reviewed by the ISSS Programming Committee.
