Submissions to Curatorial Panel For the fall 2022 through 2023 Exhibition Seasons are now open with a DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: MONDAY NOVEMBER 22nd BY 11:59PM.

SooVAC is so excited to finally open our call for art again...it has been awhile and we cannot wait to see what you have been creating! Artists for solo and group shows are selected through this open call for submissions that is free of charge. This has been our practice since 2010, with the intent of giving as many artists as possible the opportunity to exhibit. Our curatorial panel  represents diverse view points both in their arts practice and background. Our current panel consists of Betsy Carpenter, Pao Her, Carolyn Payne, Gregory Rose and Megan Vossle

SooVAC is interested in any form of visual art from individual artists, collaborative teams or curatorial proposals at any career stage. For any technical questions about your online application please contact Submittable, for any other questions contact alison@soovac.org.

1. Application Form-Fill in all of your contact information on Submittable.

2. WORK SAMPLES-EXACTLY 10 IMAGES (FOR VIDEO SEE BELOW*) Group exhibitions or collaborative projects are also accepted but the images cannot exceed 10.

 Digital Image Specifications: Images should be in JPEG format no larger than 1000 x 1000 pixels @ 72 dpi. Format each jpeg file name as “Artist’s last name_Artist’s first name_1.jpg,” “Artist’s last name_ Artist’s first name_2.jpg,” etc. Each JPEG may not exceed 1MB and 1000 pixels in any direction. *Video Submissions are also accepted in .mov format, no larger than 200MB and no more than 2 min clips for each video submission label the same as images files. Work samples cannot exceed 10 but can be a combination of video and image files.

3. IMAGE LIST- Fill out each Image description field with the following information: List the following information for each work (make sure your image number corresponds to the label on your JPEG images):
-Title of work
-Date completed
-Medium
-Dimensions (H” x W” x D”)
PLEASE INCLUDE TITLE, MEDUIM, DIMENSIONS AND DATE OR YOUR APPLICATION WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

4. ARTIST STATEMENT – doc, docx, txt, rtf or pdf format accepted. Label this document: Artist’s last name_Artist’s first name_artiststatement.doc ex. Doe_Jane_Artiststatement.doc. No longer than 1 page.

5. RESUME – doc, docx, txt, rtf or pdf format accepted. Label this document: Artist’s last name_Artist’s first name_Resume.doc ex. Doe_Jane_Resume.doc. Please provide a website if you have one. If you are applying as a group or collaborative team include all participating artists’ resumes in one document.

GOOD THINGS TO KNOW 1. Notification will be done by email, with a follow option by phone, so please make sure to include both a phone number AND email on your application. 2. Shipping to and from the gallery is contingent on funding, so artists maybe responsible for some or all of the costs.

Current Panel Members:


Betsy Carpenter is an independent curator, writer, and art advisor. She worked as a Curator of Visual Arts at the Walker Art Center from 2001-2013, and as Adjunct Curator from 2013-2015. In conjunction with the 2005 opening of the new Walker, she co-curated the museum-wide debut and co-edited Bits & Pieces Put Together to Present a Semblance of a Whole (2005) for which she wrote extensively. Other highlights from her years at the Walker include Absentee Landlord (2011), a show she curated with notorious filmmaker John Waters; Frank Gaard: Poison & Candy (2012), and Danceworks II: Merce Cunningham / Rei Kawakubo (2012).

Pao Houa Her received an MFA in photography from Yale University in 2012 after receiving a BFA in photography from MCAD in 2009. The winner of a 2016 McKnight Visual Artist Fellowship, a 2013 Jerome Fellowship for Emerging Artists, and a Minnesota State Arts Board artist’s Initiative Grant, she had a Light Work Artist Residency in Syracuse NY in 2019. Bockley Gallery states, “Pao Houa Her is recognized for her provocative photographs of the Hmong, the indigenous people of Laos who immigrated to the United States following the Vietnam War. Highly personal, Her’s images are not only a narrative extension of her own experience of being born in Laos in 1982 and then fleeing the country with her family at age three, but they also sensitively document the larger ethnic Hmong culture that became increasingly established in various locations in the United States in the late 1970s and 1980s.” Pao is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art, Photography and 2D Design at Macalaster College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Carolyn Payne is the Executive Director of Soo Visual Arts Center. She manages day to day operations, fundraising, exhibitions and community programming. She and founder Suzy Greenberg created the curatorial panel in 2010 and she has administrated the panel since its inception. She is a tireless advocate and supporter of Minnesota artists and currently serves as a Board member and Treasurer of Rosy Simas Danse.

Gregory J. Rose is an East Coast native transplanted in the Mid-West. Formally educated at The Pennsylvania State University, Gregory received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 2000, and received his Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Minnesota in 2004-both with a concentration in Drawing and Painting. Gregory has been teaching for Minnesota State since 2003 and is Fine Arts Faculty at Minneapolis Community and Technical College based in Minneapolis. Gregory has exhibited in New York along with many other US cities and has begun to build an International career. Namely known as a painter, Gregory J. Rose has been a creative force working in - Music, (Voice Over ) work in TV Commercials; The Fine Arts, Art Education and Community Engagement adding to his growing Global presence.

Megan Vossler received her BA from Brown University, and her MFA from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her artwork has been exhibited at museums and galleries around the country, including the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the de Young Museum. Megan’s work has been recognized by many national and regional arts organizations, including Yaddo, the Jerome and McKnight Foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts (for Ekphrastic 2.0 at SooVAC), and the Minnesota State Arts Board. Vossler is the drawing professor at Macalester College in St. Paul.
