The Redefining Canadian Art History Fellowship Program

Type: Awards, Grants, Fellowships [View all]
Posted by: Art Canada Institute
Deadline: Sat, January 8th, 2022

The history of art in Canada has been dominated by artists who were white men. As a result dozens of creators have been excluded from the country’s cultural narratives as presented in exhibitions and books. To facilitate a more balanced account, the Art Canada Institute has created the Redefining Canadian Art History Fellowship program. We are offering five fellowships, each worth $30,000, to support studies of artists whose work has been overlooked due to their gender or racial or cultural backgrounds. Areas of research speciality may include, but are not limited to, First Nations, Métis, and Inuit art; African Canadian art; Asian Canadian art; art by racialized Canadian artists; and Canadian art and gender and sexual diversity. Fellows will work with mentors who will advise on their projects, attend events to connect with leaders in their chosen field, share their research in a presentation at a national symposium, and present their studies in bilingual publications on the Art Canada Institute website.

Visit https://www.aci-iac.ca/about-our-fellowships/ to learn more, sign up for a virtual information session, and apply. For more information, please email Jocelyn Anderson at fellowships@aci-iac.ca.

All applications must be received by January 8, 2022.

About the Art Canada Institute:

Launched in 2013, the Art Canada Institute is the only national institution whose mandate is to promote the study of an inclusive multi-vocal Canadian art history to as broad an audience as possible, in both English and French. The ACI works with more than fifty of Canada’s leading art historians and curators, and we are creating a central digital resource that functions as an online art museum, a digital library, and an interactive Canadian art encyclopedia.
