Goodall Visiting Fellows Program

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Wofford College
Deadline: Tue, March 1st, 2022

Wofford College, located in Spartanburg, SC, invites applications for the newly established Goodall Visiting Fellows Program, due by March 1, 2022.

We provide three types of opportunities, all of which include housing located adjacent to the Glendale Shoals Preserve and Waterfall.  Artists, writers, musicians, and interdisciplinary creatives can apply for a semester of teaching and practice, a short focused residency, or a personal retreat. The “Thinking Like a River” house has a kitchen, bedroom, bath, and studio space for your exclusive use.  Fellows are asked to engage with the Glendale Shoals site, which encompasses the ruins of a former textile mill on the banks of Lawson’s Fork Creek, and is now the outpost of the Environmental Studies Department at Wofford College.

The semester-long residency supports creatives with housing, a stipend, and the option to teach one or two courses if the Fellow has a terminal degree. Teaching options include introductory courses in the Department of Art and Art History, the Liberal Arts Seminar, or English 102, depending on the Fellow’s area of expertise. Teaching artists will also have access to the facilities of the Studio Art department for their own use, including a woodshop, ceramics, printmaking, and digital studio.

The focused residency option includes a stay of two weeks up to a month, with housing included.  Fellows are asked to engage with Wofford College through a lecture, workshop, or similar event.

The “Thinking Like a River” house is located in the mill village of Glendale, South Carolina, just a block away from the trails along beautiful Lawson’s Fork Creek, historic bridge, and Wofford’s Goodall Environmental Studies Center. Like other homes in the village, it was once a duplex that housed mill workers and has been converted to a single-family home with a large front porch.

The private living quarters include a furnished bedroom with a Full-size bed, as well as a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, and laundry room on the first floor. An open studio space and a second bedroom with two twin beds are located upstairs. Internet access, linens, and all utilities are included. There is off-street parking for your car. The closest grocery, restaurants, etc. are about three miles away. The house is multilevel and is not wheelchair accessible.
