Creative Time Open Call for Public Art

Do you have a bold, ambitious, maybe even impossible seeming idea for a public art project? We’re ready to dream with you.

For the third iteration of the Creative Time Open Call, we are opening applications to artists based anywhere in the United States or the sovereign tribal nations within its borders. Over the years, Creative Time has produced hundreds of public projects that have been truly beyond the ordinary. Now, we want to know what public artwork you would create in New York City for the summer of 2023. 

Since 1974, Creative Time has produced some of the most extraordinary public art projects in New York City and beyond. Duke Riley’s Fly By Night sent thousands of pigeons gliding through the dusk sky in synchronized choreography. Pedro Reyes took over the Brooklyn Army Terminal for Doomocracy, a true house of horrors inspired by the 2016 presidential election. This past summer, Rashid Johnson’s Red Stage welcomed over 150 participants in a righteous Covid-era resurgence of performance and protest; and Kamala Sankaram, Creative Time’s 2021 Open Call artist, presented The Last Stand, a 10 hour experimental opera for trees. We invite you to tell us what you would do if there were no constraints—if selected, we’ll work with you to make it a reality.

What are we looking for? We are compelled by ideas that have a clear point of view, a nuanced consideration of site and land, a sensibility towards the public(s), and an audacious spirit. This year’s application process has been simplified, with the labor of submitting detailed budgets and considering feasibility removed. For now, just tell us your wildest dream for a public art project, why and how it speaks to our moment, and we’ll take it from there.

The selected artist will receive a $10,000 artist fee. This is a direct payment to the artist. The production budget is separate from this fee and will be managed by Creative Time.

All applications will be thoughtfully reviewed by representative Creative Time staff and ten proposals will be chosen for a selection committee to review. These finalists will be invited to meet with the selection committee and Creative Time staff virtually or in person to discuss their project in more detail. The selected artist will be announced in July and should be available to begin working with Creative Time this summer.
