Welcome (M)ART Artist in Residence

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Wave Pool: a contemporary art fulfillment center
Deadline: Wed, August 31st, 2022

The Welcome (M)ART program is a unique opportunity to create an immersive and interactive installation at The Welcome Project, a space that centers the immigrant and refugee experience and includes a small food market and teaching kitchen in the Camp Washington Community of Cincinnati.

Socially Engaged Art (SEA) has a history of using food to achieve both social connection and critical commentary. Food is often utilized as a quick convener of communities and can bring us easily into dialogue on issues of power, place, sustainability, and culture. Today, more and more emerging and established artists choose to work with food as process, subject, metaphor, and realization.

Museums and traditional galleries are not adequately equipped to foster this kind of art making either due to lack of flexible and suitable space (lacking a kitchen, food license, etc.) and/or due to the disconnect between a museum space and the need for these projects to be seamlessly embedded into a community. Social Practice Artworks are successful based on engaging and collaborating in authentic and accessible ways with residents, most likely those who don’t frequent art centers and galleries. Most often, these projects need to happen on the ground level of communities, and artists find their way to collaborating and infiltrating parks, storefronts, sidewalks, and other everyday places as a result. This is why we are pleased to offer this new opportunity for artists engaging with food production,

Welcome (M)ART upends the disconnect between museums and community spaces, offering food-based social practice art projects in a space designed to both reach intended audiences in a real and accessible way while also offering the context of an arts center to best publicize and offer curatorial accreditation for the works created.

Selected project grant awardees will receive:

A $5,000 project stipend to create an immersive, thought provoking, and interactive installation at The Welcome Project along with several related public programs and events over a three month period

Programming and installation support from Wave Pool

Staffing support to help execute the experience for the public during open hours

We will have seasonal projects, beginning with the first one in Winter 2023 (January-March).

We hope to select all four residencies for 2023 from this annual open call.
