Innovations in Painting

In school, artists are taught to think outside the “box,” yet academia expects us to fit within the Bauhaus definitions of painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, etc. But, as technologies have developed over the past 100 years, artists have challenged and stretched the traditional categories to include video, graphics, and digital art.
Does paint have to be included to make a work a "painting"? Can the media be poured, sewn, collaged, or printed? Can a piece be made of purchased material/objects? Can it exist in space and still be called a painting? Does a canvas have to be stretched into a square or rectangle? Does it even have to be displayed on a wall? What about virtual/digital/video projects? Can alternative mediums be thought of in the context of painting? How has the history of rules-breaking in painting propelled the discipline forward?
Pittsburgh Seen is currently accepting submissions that explore the breakdown & cross pollination of techniques & categories as they apply to painting. We are a multi-platform online gallery supporting/promoting early to mid-career artists via thematic exhibitions.
Exhibiting artists are featured/promoted via website, social media, and pop-up exhibitions worldwide and have the opportunity for studio visits via Zoom from Pittsburgh Seen and its curators. All artists must be over 21 years of age and not currently enrolled in an undergraduate program to exhibit.
