This panel invites scholars to explore the multifaceted connections between modern and contemporary queer art history, democracy, representation, and American politics. We aim to delve into a spectrum of topics, including the role of queer artists in challenging societal norms, the evolution of visual narratives that disrupt traditional power structures, and the intersectionality of identity politics within the artistic realm. Furthermore, we seek to examine how these artistic expressions have contributed to the broader movement of expanding democratic principles to embrace the rights and experiences of individuals (regardless of their sexual orientation).
Research presented in this panel may include analyses of specific artworks, artists, or movements that have significantly impacted the dialogue on democracy and queer representation. We encourage studies exploring the parallels between art and political activism, investigating the ways in which artistic expression has been a catalyst for social change. Additionally, we welcome research that sheds light on the ongoing struggles for equal representation in contemporary society, examining how queer art continues to challenge, redefine, and contribute to the democratic narrative. This panel aspires to attract diverse perspectives, fostering a dynamic discussion on the intricate relationship between queer art history and the broader canvas of democratic ideals.
