MacDowell: Spring Summer 2025

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: MacDowell
Deadline: Tue, September 10th, 2024

Beginning August 15, 2024, MacDowell welcomes artists who are creating new original works of art to apply for a MacDowell Fellowship. A MacDowell Fellowship (awarded through a competitive application process) consists of a residency up to six weeks and includes a private studio, housing, and three meals per day. MacDowell is designed to facilitate a balance between social interaction and independent focus on work. Private studios available to artists 24 hours a day, together with the dining and recreation rooms at the main hall, combine to provide an environment adaptable to each individual’s needs. Artists currently enrolled in a degree program or younger than 21 do need to wait to apply. PhD candidates may apply if finished with all coursework.

The duration of each residency is between two and six weeks. Applicants chose their desired length of residency during the application process.

Each artist has exclusive use of a studio while in residence. Some artists will sleep in their studio, others will sleep in a private bedroom in a shared dormitory.

MacDowell encourages applications from artists of all backgrounds and all countries in the following disciplines: architecture, film/video arts, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition, theatre, and visual arts. Any applicant whose proposed project does not fall clearly within one of these artistic disciplines should contact the admissions department for guidance. MacDowell does not provide instruction or supplies for artists-in-residence; the intention is that artists practice their work independently without assistance. MacDowell does have a black and white darkroom, small electric kiln, baby grand pianos and some printmaking equipment.

MacDowell is located in a rural environment. Artists in residence need to be comfortable with a degree of solitude and disconnection from the outside world.

There is no cost for a Fellowship, in order to open the residency experience to a wider, more diverse community of artists. MacDowell offers two financial assistance programs to those who have financial need and have been awarded a Fellowship. Travel reimbursement grants are available to defray the cost of domestic and international travel to and from New Hampshire. Need-based stipends are available to artists who would not otherwise be able to afford the time away that a Fellowship requires. Stipends may be used to cover rent, utilities, childcare, and other expenses that accrue during a residency. They may also be directed toward equipment costs and to replace lost income. Artists may apply for these stipends and travel grants only if they are awarded a MacDowell Fellowship.

Please visit MacDowell’s website for additional information and access to the application (starting August 15th). The admissions staff can be reached at admissions@macdowell.org
