For our inaugural issue of the Chicago Journal of Visual Art we are on the hunt for essays regarding the visual arts, aiming to showcase the work of young writers, historians, and artists in Chicago. The deadline for submission is May 3, 2026. All works selected will be published digitally and in print.

There are three main areas of focus highlighted below:

 

Art History

The Art History section seeks to publish works from an academic viewpoint. There exists no limit on the topic or period the contributor wishes to cover. Works should range from 1500-3000 words.

Art Criticism

The Art Criticism section is focused on critical review of an exhibition or an event in Chicago. Art Criticism pieces follow an op-ed format. Works have an upper limit of 1000 words. 

Interviews and Profiles

The Interviews and Profiles section focuses on exhibiting the work of artists and creatives based in Chicago through writing. The upper limit for this section is set at 800 words.

 

Submission Requirements

Pieces are to be sent to chicagojournalofvisualart@gmail.com in PDF format, along with a short bio (50-70 words max) containing information about you (name, date and place of birth, education, projects)

The piece, bio, and any images you wish to include must be sent separately as attachments. We kindly request to label all attachments as follows:

Piece: [Surname]_[Name].pdf
Bio: [Surname]_[Name]_ Bio.pdf
Images: [Surname]_[Name]_[Image Number].jpg

Bibliography must be in Chicago Manual of Style 18th edition (full note)

The Chicago Journal of Visual Art focuses on the publication of text regarding the visual arts, aiming to showcase the work of young writers, historians, and artists in the Chicagoland area. The inaugural print release is scheduled for the autumn of 2026.
