NEW YORK, NY –March 19, 2019 – 92Y’s acclaimed Jewelry Center announces it will extend its deadline to April 12, 2019 to accept applications for its International Jewelry Artist Residency. This is a juried residency for cutting-edge, emerging and established jewelry artists to develop their work in the multifaceted New York City art scene. For a month from August 14 through September 15, 2019, the Residency will provide the opportunity for an international artist with a studio-based practice to develop a new body of work or complete research while engaging with NYC’s cultural community. Applications and supporting materials must be submitted by April 1, 2019. A rotating panel of experts and professionals in the arts and humanities will independently review applications and materials, and the selected jeweler or metalsmith will be notified by April 24, 2019.

Jonathan Wahl, Director of 92Y’s Jewelry Center said, “Now in its third year, this residency is unique—the only one solely devoted to jewelry artisans and based in NYC, and we look forward to welcoming another artist.”

The International Jewelry Artist Residency includes housing in a 92Y Residence, access to a 24-hour private studio working space, and travel expenses to and from NYC. It offers the opportunity for an artist to share their distinct aesthetic, technical or design style with the NYC design community through a two-day lecture and workshop at the 92Y Jewelry Center during the last weekend of the residency, and through professional meetings with participating cultural institutions while expanding their artistic and professional development.

Proposals for the self-directed residencies must be compatible with available working studio spaces, facilities, and resources. Artistic merit and promise are the basis for selections, but the relevancy of how the NYC environment will affect or progress the artist’s work is weighed highly in the selection process. Mature as well as emerging artists are encouraged to apply. The residency is awarded to one artist each year. Guidelines and application submissions are available at: https://stage.int.92y.org/jewelry-residency.aspx https://www.92y.org/jewelry-residency.aspx

About 92Y’s Jewelry Center (watch our Jewelry Center video here)

The Jewelry Center at 92Y is the place where artists and designers from the world of studio jewelry, fashion jewelry and academia meet to create, teach and connect. From its beginnings as a single metalworking class in 1930, the center has grown to become the largest and most highly regarded program of its kind in the nation, and the oldest open studio in New York City. Its stellar faculty span the worlds of production and art, and foster a space where all aspects of jewelry design can be explored.

Under the direction of esteemed artist Jonathan Wahl, the center serves more than 1,400 students a year through 60 weekly classes, weekend workshops and visiting artists. Four fully equipped studios enable specialized training in such techniques as enameling, goldsmithing, silversmithing, stone setting and wax carving, in addition to a formal Judaica metalsmithing program that is unique in the nation. The wide variety of classes and levels allows students to pursue comprehensive courses of study, whether a basic introduction for the absolute beginner, or advanced workshops and studio time for pre-professionals and professionals refining their skills.

The center hosts the only jeweler Artist in Residence program in New York City, and is open to artists on an international scale. Truly multifaceted, the 92Y Jewelry Center is a New York City gem with an increasingly global profile. The 92Y International Jewelry Artist Residency Program is supported by 92Y Board Member Kathy Chazen.
