MSU-Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge Artist in Residence

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Mississippi State University
Deadline: Thu, December 31st, 2020

The MSU-Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge Artist-In-Residence Program is a partnership with the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, Mississippi State University Department of Art, and the Friends of the Noxubee Refuge with support from the Starkville Area Arts Council.

The Artist-In-Residence Program located at the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge offers professional visual artists, writers, composers, and performers the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the Mississippi’s inspiring landscape and wildlife. Artists are needed to translate the national wildlife refuges’ history and purpose, as a place where wildlife comes first, into images and other forms of art that bring enjoyment and a deeper understanding of the Refuge.

Requirements: Selected artists stay in Refuge housing for two- to four-weeks during which they perform their research, participate in the daily and seasonal activities of park rangers, such as monitoring wildlife, and hold two public outreach programs (approx. 45-min each).

Public Programs: Programming planned by the artist may include a combination of presentations, demonstrations, workshops, exploratory walks, performances, or meet and greets.

Artwork Donations: Selected artists participating in the Artist-In-Residence Program are asked to donate to the refuge an original piece of work from, and representative of, their residency. This piece will serve to promote and celebrate the refuge and its wildlife. Donated artwork must be received no later than one year after an artist’s residency. Artwork is exhibited in the Welcome Center at the Noxubee Refuge and used for educational purposes by Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge, Mississippi State University, or Friends of Noxubee Refuge nonprofit cooperating association for their products.

How to Apply: Applications for the program are accepted throughout the year. Applicants submit digital files of recent work, a statement of purpose with proposal of research, and digital CV or resume of artistic and/or professional experiences. Applicants must indicate in their proposal the two- to four- week period they wish to perform their residency. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications at least 5 months prior to the preferred start date of their residence.
