2022 GoggleWorks Summer Residency

Program Overview: GoggleWorks Center for the Arts will offer three residencies this summer to outstanding creatives who will spend 10-weeks, from June 6 - August 12, on our campus developing a project or body of work. The Summer Residency Program was created to infuse new, creative energy to the GoggleWorks’ community with an emphasis on facilitating cross-disciplinary experimentation. The residency provides personal work space, access to GoggleWorks’ communal studios (ceramics, gardens, warm glass, hot glass, photography, printmaking, metalsmithing, wood, and V.R. Lab), and a culminating exhibition or event showcasing the residents’ efforts. Selection of residents is highly competitive and based on the strength of the applicant’s project proposal and/or quality of work and experience. Residents should be self-motivated and enthusiastic, dedicated to their artwork, and enjoy working with other people in a communal studio setting.

 

The Summer Residency Program provides: 

Working space with 24/7 access (fully-funded)

Access to GoggleWorks’ communal studios

Shared, furnished housing conveniently located across the street and within walking distance to our campus (fully-funded)

$2,500 stipend (for travel, living and material expenses)

Additional paid opportunities to teach in GoggleWorks’ community arts programs

Culminating exhibition or event

 

Accepted applicants agree to: 

Bring a sampling of selected works for an introductory public exhibition 

Participate in GoggleWorks’ community art programs, including presenting an artist talk and discussing their process with GoggleWorks visitors

Complete their proposed body of work/project within the time frame of the residency

Complete works for culminating experience by August 3, 2020

Leave one legacy component for the GoggleWorks’ permanent collection*

Retrieve work upon completion of exhibition or event

 

* Urban horticulture resident may leave alternate legacy component outside of the visual arts

 

Portfolio-Based Application: The portfolio-based application allows creatives to focus on their personal studio practice and the development of a body of work. Portfolio-based applications are able to select one studio of focus; however, special consideration will be given to artists interested in developing multi-media work within more than one of our eight studios. 

Place-Making Application: The place-making application allows creatives to focus on a site specific project to be completed during the 10-week residency time frame. Special consideration will be given to proposals that take advantage of the multi-media possibilities offered on our campus and/or involve community based installations.  Applicants are encouraged to be cognizant of GoggleWorks’ surrounding urban environment and consider how their projects may provide a mechanism for social outreach and/or emphasize community engagement.

Urban Horticulture Application: The urban-growing application allows horticulturalist creatives to focus their energy into the newest studio at GoggleWorks: GoggleWorks Gardens at Lauer’s Park. This urban community gardening partnership takes creativity in a new direction as the summer resident will focus on growing and gardening practices for the 10-week residency time frame. Special consideration will be given to proposals that take advantage of trends in organic growing, urban farming movements, and sharing skills with the immediate community. Applicants are encouraged to be cognizant of the reality that GoggleWorks’ is located in a food desert, and consider how their projects may provide a mechanism for social outreach and/or emphasize community engagement.
