Cultures from Below: Representation and Resistance in the Margins (Graduate Student Conference)

Type: Calls For Papers [View all]
Posted by: Emory University
Deadline: Tue, December 15th, 2026

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese welcomes submissions for our inaugural Emory Graduate Conference in Hispanic and Lusophone Studies, which will be held on March 19th.

This one-day in-person conference explores aesthetics, approaches and pedagogies from below as a framework for rethinking power, culture, and resistance in Latin America and related spaces. We are interested in how cultural and political expressions from below—rooted in everyday life, collective memory, and exclusion—challenge dominant and canonical narratives, whether talking about the past, the present, or the future.

We invite contributions related to Latin American, Latinx, Afrolatinx, Indigenous, Iberian, Lusophone and Caribbean studies that challenge hierarchies of race, sex, and class through literature, digital humanities, pedagogy, visual arts, oral history, ethnography, and beyond. We are particularly interested in how unconventional perspectives from below break through to reshape our understanding of culture, power, memory and care. We welcome interdisciplinary dialogue engaging with the framework of the “below” in attention to aesthetics, as regimes of sensibility and forms of expression that are not exclusive to the world of art and literature.

We encourage submissions in Spanish, Portuguese and English from graduate students across all stages focusing, among other themes, on the following:

--Ecologies of resistance and environmental justice aesthetics

--Dissident Epistemologies, Indigenous Knowledge, and Translations of the Global South

--Digital Humanities defying/renewing the canon

--Centering on Abya-Yala stories and approaches

--(Post)colonial legacies and disputes in the Caribbean

--Representations, performances, and activisms from dissident genders and sexualities

--Artistic and scientific visual cultures in the margins of Empires

Applications should include an abstract and be submitted through the following form: Cultures from Below: Representation and Resistance in the Margins
