Summer Homestead Experience program for academics | artists | writers | steam

Type: Residencies, Workshops, Exchanges [View all]
Posted by: Sarasvati creative Space
Deadline: Tue, March 31st, 2026

Are you yearning to connect more to the natural world? Whether that be for your work or your lifestyle, that inner urge to connect to the human spirit and the landscape may be calling you. Technology, urban society, and a.i. is rapidly transforming our world and academic lives. Whatever scale you are thinking about - backyard chickens and container garden, a full scale dream of a little cabin for summer retreats or future retirement, or even an entrepreneurial path - this homestead experience is up your alley. Learn from an academic who was once in your shoes and is looking for a new crop of mentees in a nurturing environment.

What and when? Spend the month of July (July 2 - August 2) in a formal workshop - Homestead Experience Program - where you can combine a residency with a jam-packed seminar and active learning opportunity. Engage with the super fun donkeys; sit and observe the quirky chickens, roosters, and pea fowl; and in your free time sit on the bluff above the lazy Buffalo River or explore the rocky riparian zone.

Are you hesitant about exploring beyond city limits into a rural area because of the state of our current society (and what it might be like as a blue dot in a more typical red zone)? Are you unsure of where to start in terms of searching for your own little slice of land?

Discover the difference between a dream of a homestead life with the practical realities of the day in and day out aspects of the lifestyle you decide to pursue. Alumni of this program become eligible for long term planning and thinking about this particular space as an organism with a long healthy life as well as building a network of us across the miles.

Program includes seminar style sessions with topics that include stories of how your host - former tenured graphic design professor - made the leap and the things she has learned in the last 12 years to help you on your own journey.

5 spots available. Furnished lodging and access to studio space (needs may help determine the final group). A few group meals and one-on-one conversations to put your dreams and thoughts into a practical plan. More info and application on the website.

Any age and stage of career will be considered. Couples and/or parents with one child (due to space limitations) will also be considered. At least one of the 5 participants should have a car.
