Call for Papers: James McNeill Whistler in Action

18-19 June, Clore Lecture Theatre, Tate Britain

Supported by the Manton Foundation

  

In tandem with the exhibition James McNeill Whistler at Tate Britain (21 May – 27 September), we are holding an international conference to examine the theme of ‘Whistler in Action’.  We invite proposals for 15-minute papers on the following subject areas:

·         Whistler in Chile

·         Whistler and warfare

·         Whistler in Paris

·         Whistler and music

·         Whistler and design (interior and costume)

·         Whistler and abstraction

·         Whistler as an American

·         Whistler and ‘finish’

 

Please submit an abstract of no more than 200 words, and a short biography, to Dr Isobel Muir: Isobel.muir@tate.org.uk by the deadline of 1 May 2026.

Participation in the Whistler conference is free of charge for speakers (refreshments included). Standard-fare travel expenses outside London and overnight accommodation will also be paid for, as necessary.
