Art and Politics
Online Exhibition June 13, 2026 - July 13, 2026
The relationship between art and politics is one of the most enduring, and contested, domains of human experience and expression. How do we represent, or give form to, the patterns of collective life, and what do those shared realities do to the practice of creating art? Some insist that one should take a side in political struggle, while others claim that art is unique in existing in a realm beyond. However, art and politics both draw, sometimes beautifully, sometimes painfully, sometimes absurdly, on a shared root of human experience, on the material of life. Site:Brooklyn invites submissions from across all mediums that explore the connection between artistic creation and political life.
About the Juror:Guusje Sanders, originally from the Netherlands and residing in the United States since 2006, joined Mingei International Museum’s curatorial team as Curator in August 2023. Most recently she curated Boundless: Reflections of Southern California Landscapes in Midcentury Studio Ceramics and Restitched: Feed Sacks in Mid-Twentieth Century Quilts and co-curated Blue Gold: The Art and Science of Indigo, presented as part of Getty’s PST ART: Art and Science Collide. Prior to this position, she served as the Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego, formerly Lux Art Institute for 6 years. Approaching her curatorial practice as a platform for diverse voices, she places a strong emphasis on accessibility and curatorial and institutional accountability. Sanders holds a Master’s in Exhibition and Museum Studies from the San Francisco Art Institute and a Bachelor’s in Art History from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
About the Gallery: Site:Brooklyn Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting the current practice of contemporary artists. We are taking Site:Brooklyn online with a new series of interactive exhibitions. Our goal remains the same, to connect artists with an expert and diverse set of jurors through the open call format. Our new program focuses on online open call exhibitions, selected by a cast of new jurors, solo artist features, and spotlights.
