Deviance

For art historians, deviance in the material record often registers a significant shift and reveals new stories.

Deviance, anomaly, and variance create opposition to dominant narratives and hegemonies.  Identifying deviance in iconography, from tradition, in formal characteristics, and in practice, among many other forms, helps to recover voices, identities, communities, and worldviews.  The deviant might signal resistance to oppression, the forging of novel traditions, the emergence of new aesthetics, or the creation of original perspectives, to name a few possibilities.

This art historical symposium interrogates how "deviance" in art conveys meaning.  We seek papers that explore any form or manifestation of deviance in works of art and how to interpret it.  Papers may address artworks in any medium, from any art historical period (ancient to modern), and from around the world.  Critical theory and new approaches to examining the issue of deviance are encouraged.  Papers should be 20-minutes in length and present research that has not yet been published.

The Deviance symposium takes place on Wednesday October 28, 2026 from 6:00pm-8:30pm at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island.  The symposium will be open to the public without registration fees or cost.  Papers may be delivered in person or online via Zoom, although preference is given to papers that will be presented in person.  A $500 stipend will be offered to speakers who present in person to help defray travel expenses.

This symposium is held in conjunction with a juried group exhibition of contemporary painting and works on paper entitled Deviant at The Hamilton Gallery from October 22–November 22, 2026.  Salve Regina University is a private liberal arts university in Newport, Rhode Island with Art History and Studio Art programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

To participate, please email a 250-word abstract for the paper that you would like to present and a CV (or shortened CV) to Anthony Mangieri (anthony.mangieri@salve.edu) and Ernest Jolicoeur (ernest.jolicoeur@salve.edu).  In your email, please let us know whether you plan to present your paper in person or online.

Deadline for submission of abstracts is September 12, 2026.  Notification is by September 17th.  The symposium takes place on October 28, 2026.
