Art Journal Call for “Research Note” Submissions

The Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board of Art Journal invite submissions of short “Research Notes” for publication. Research Notes is a new category in Art Journal featuring more experimental writing and timely scholarship on modern and contemporary art. Submissions of innovative projects and ongoing research are encouraged. We are especially interested in research and writing that amplifies the voices of scholars and practitioners who are Black, Indigenous, or persons of color.

Art Journal maintains a rigorous double-blind peer review process. Accepted Research Notes will be reviewed internally by the editorial team and externally by peer reviewers. We ask that the author’s name be removed from the manuscript to maintain anonymity. Art Journal does not accept previously published material.

To submit a Research Note to Art Journal, please send the following items to Jordana Moore Saggese, Editor-in-Chief, at art.journal.editor@collegeart.org:

  • A manuscript of no more than 4,000 words, including notes. Please ensure that the author’s name does not appear within the manuscript and that the document has been fully anonymized for the peer review process (Microsoft Word).
  • A cover sheet including the author’s name, a 60-word biography, mailing address, email address, phone number, and the word count of the entire submission (Microsoft Word).
  • A list of illustration captions (Microsoft Word).
  • A 250-word abstract (Microsoft Word).
  • A PDF file containing the images and captions for all illustrations, no larger than 10 MB.

Submitted documents must be in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with one inch margins.

Art Journal Call for Submissions for Special Issue on “Whiteness”

Art Journal Call for Submissions for Special Issue on “Whiteness”

On the twentieth anniversary of John Bowles’s Blinded by the White: Art and History at the Limit of Whiteness (Art Journal 60, no. 4) the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board of Art Journal invite submissions that reflect upon whiteness and the state of the field. We are interested in shorter, more experimental texts, reflections, and pedagogical tools or artifacts (for example, sample syllabi), as well as more traditional research essays. Submissions of innovative projects and ongoing research are encouraged. The deadline for submissions is May 14, 2021.
