Arts in Turkey Tour: Yesterday and Today

CAA has partnered with Tutku Tours to provide an exclusive offer for its members to spend two weeks exploring the ancient and contemporary sides of Turkey, from May 27 to June 10, 2014. Highlights of the Arts in Turkey Tour: Yesterday and Today trip include stops in Istanbul, Iznik, Canakkale, Troy, Assos, Ayvalik, Izmir, Pergamum, Ephesus, Kusadasi, Pamukkale, Catalhoyuk, Konya, Cappadocia, and Ankara. This tour is a one-of-a-kind experience that takes visitors on a spectacular journey through ancient and modern Turkey. Visit the workshops of local artists, learn about techniques of ancient art, and take in galleries and museums in some of the world’s oldest cities.
The tour begins with three days in Istanbul—the city on seven hills and the capital of two former empires—where travelers will visit the major attractions, including the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, and Hagia Sophia, and also get to know the city’s vibrant street life and local art scene. The tour will then visit the Iznick Foundation’s tile factory, the archaeological site of ancient Troy, and the Pergamum acropolis. The city of Izmir, which boasts numerous museums and art galleries, comes next, and later the port city of Ephesus and Pamukkale, near the ancient city of Herapolis. A handful of other exciting stops will happen in the several days before the return flight from Ankara.
In addition to access to cultural and historic sites, the Art of Turkey Tour will provide CAA members with time for rest and relaxation. The group will stop at a carpet school in Ephesus, along with an overnight stay at a spa hotel at the Pamukkale hot springs. The end of the trip includes a stop in Cappadocia, where travelers can explore the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a vast collection of painted cave-churches dating from 1000 AD, and also watch a whirling dervishes ceremony. At the final destination, Ankara, the tour will visit the famed Museum of Anatolian Civilizations.
Getting There: Turkish Airlines provides nonstop, direct flights from the United States and Canada from the following cities: New York, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Chicago, Houston, and Toronto.
Land and Air Rates: $3,990 per person for a double room; $4,780 per person for a single room.

Enter your email address in the box on the left and click the “Begin registration” button immediately underneath it. On the next page, type in your personal details. By the time you get to the page’s footer, a validation code email should have turned up in your email inbox (if not, check your junk folder). As 2012 comes to a close, the College Art Association extends thanks for your ongoing membership and support. Members, like you and me, are the engine and purpose for CAA, and it is through our help that CAA provides the myriad programs and services that so many artists, art historians, and other professionals in the visual arts depend upon. This fall, please consider making a generous contribution to CAA’s Annual Fund.
The Annual Fund is integral to CAA’s mission, providing flexible funding to supplement the project-specific support that comprises the majority of charitable gifts to the organization. CAA is dedicated to continuing prized resources that members have come to expect, including:
- The orchestration of the world’s preeminent conference for artists, art historians, critics, conservators, curators, students, and other professionals in the visual arts
- The production of its highly regarded publications: The Art Bulletin, Art Journal, and caa.reviews

Update on CAA after Superstorm Sandy

Wednesday afternoon update: CAA staffers will return to the office on Thursday, November 8.
As of Tuesday morning, November 6, CAA’s building at 50 Broadway in lower Manhattan has electric power, but the telephones, internet, and heat are not operable. The office will remain closed until further notice. The situation, however, is being reviewed several times a day.
The full CAA staff, which lives throughout the New York, New Jersey, and Long Island regions, is safe.
The senior staff held a conference call on Sunday to discuss options for working. Email is being supported offsite on an emergency and temporary basis. Consequently, there are delays in the transmission of emails—some messages may not be delivered. It will take time to repair telephone service. The building superintendent’s office at 50 Broadway cannot yet determine when heat will be restored.
CAA’s website and conference site are functioning normally. People may continue registering for the conference, workshops, opening reception, and tours; they may also renew their membership or join the organization.

CAA Mails 2013 Conference Information and Registration

This week CAA will begin mailing Conference Information and Registration, which provides important details, instructions, and deadlines for attending and participating in the 101st Annual Conference, to all individual and institutional CAA members. Nonmembers and those wanting a digital file now can download a PDF of the booklet. The conference will take place February 13–16, 2013, in New York.
Following sections on registration and CAA membership, Conference Information and Registration describes travel, lodging, and transportation options and explains the basic processes for candidates seeking jobs and employers placing classifieds and renting booths and tables in the Interview Hall. In addition, the publication lists topics for eleven Professional-Development Workshops. If you want to connect with former and current professors and students, consult the Reunions and Receptions page. The booklet includes paper forms for CAA membership, conference registration, workshops, special events, and mentoring enrollment.
The contents of Conference Information and Registration also appear on the conference website, which is being updated regularly between now and the February meeting. You may also choose to join CAA and register online.
Appraisers Association of America Presents “On and Off the Road,” an Evening with America’s Most Popular Appraisers

The Appraisers Association of America, an affiliated society, invites CAA members to attend “On and Off the Road,” an evening with America’s most popular appraisers, to be held at the Grolier Club in New York on Tuesday, October 16, 2012. Experts from television’s Antiques Roadshow—Lee Dunbar, Kathleen Harwood, Daile Kaplan, Leigh Keno, Betty Krulik, Kevin Zavian, and Alasdair Nichol—will share their experiences on and off camera. Attendees will have the rare opportunity to hear some of the country’s leading appraisers discuss the process of evaluating everything from fine art to memorabilia. You also have the chance for private appraisal consultation to find out if you own a hidden gem. Meet and speak with some of the most trusted experts in the business.
Tickets are $85 for individuals and $75 for CAA members, staff, and guests ; $200 for patrons and $175 CAA members, staff, and guests; and $350 for a patron duo and $300 CAA members, staff, and guests. Tickets are tax deductible, with the proceeds benefiting the association’s Appraisal Institute to support educational programs on connoisseurship, assessment, and valuation.
