CAA News Today

CAA invites individual members to propose a session for the 102nd Annual Conference, taking place February 12–15, 2014, in Chicago, Illinois. Proposals should cover the breadth of current thought and research in visual art, art and architectural history, theory and criticism, pedagogical issues, museum and curatorial practice, conservation, and developments in technology. For full details on the submission process for the conference, please review the information published on the Chair a 2014 Annual Conference Session webpage.

The Annual Conference Committee welcomes session proposals from established artists and scholars, along with those from younger scholars, emerging and midcareer artists, and graduate students. Particularly welcome are proposals that highlight interdisciplinary work. Artists are especially encouraged to propose sessions appropriate to dialogue and information exchange relevant to artists.

The submission process for the 2014 conference is now open. In order to submit a proposal, you must be a current CAA member. Deadline extended: September 14, 2012; no late applications are accepted.

The results of CAA’s 2012 membership survey, sent to all active individual members, are now in. Over 1,600 members responded to the survey, which was open from January 25 to February 10, 2012, and the results are very enlightening. Several highlights include these findings:

  • Most CAA members (63 percent) joined when they were in graduate school
  • Almost half (48 percent) are faculty members at two- and four-year colleges or universities
  • The number-one reason why people initially joined CAA was to assist their job search
  • Job postings in the Online Career Center are the primary reason why people retain membership, followed by networking opportunities afforded by CAA
  • Most CAA members support a greater internet presence for the journals. About 72 percent would like an expanded online version of Art Journal, and 70 percent want to see The Art Bulletin on the web
  • Advocacy for the visual arts was voted the most important CAA function, with 67 percent of respondents rating it as “extremely important.” The Annual Conference and the Online Career Center tied for second place, with 58 percent each.
  • Only 17 percent of the CAA members who responded participate in CAA’s social networking on Twitter and Facebook
  • After CAA’s own publications, the most-read art periodicals by members are Art in America, ARTnews, and Artforum
  • The top-three advocacy issues for CAA members are government funding for the arts and humanities, freedom of expression and censorship, and intellectual-property rights (including the cost for image reproduction, fair use, and terms of copyright)
  • The majority of write-in comments addressed the costs of membership and the conference, but other recurring themes include the need to broaden CAA’s focus to embrace a wider range of disciplines and areas of interest, the need for further advocacy efforts, and the need for greater support for adjunct faculty

CAA greatly appreciates the feedback of its members.

As a service organization, CAA recognizes that knowing and responding to the professional needs of its constituents is vital to ensuring the effectiveness of the organization. In 2011, CAA contracted the services of an expert consultant, Raym Crow of the Chain Bridge Group, to help determine the future of its publications and membership program. The information gathered in the survey, and the resultant feedback from Crow, will be used by CAA leaders to help determine its priorities and potential directions.

Since membership fees cover less than half of CAA’s operating costs, voluntary contributions from members significantly help to facilitate the wide range of programs and services that the organization offers. In the Acknowledgments section of its website, CAA recognizes the distinguished contributors for each of the following in calendar year 2011:

  • The Centennial Campaign celebrates CAA’s one hundredth anniversary, a celebratory landmark for any organization but particularly so for CAA given its dynamic influence in shaping the study and practice of the visual arts
  • The Donors Circle of Patron, Sponsoring, and Sustaining Members includes individuals who contribute to CAA above and beyond their regular dues
  • Life Members are individuals who make one-time payments of $5,000 and remain active CAA members for life
  • The Art Bulletin Publication Fund supports the production of CAA’s preeminent scholarly journal covering all areas and periods of art history
  • The Art Journal Publication Fund supports the production of CAA’s cutting-edge quarterly of contemporary art and ideas
  • The caa.reviews Publication Fund supports the production of CAA’s online journal devoted to critical reviews of books, exhibitions, and projects in all areas and periods of art history and visual studies
  • The Annual Conference Travel Grants help cover expenses for graduate students in art history and studio art, and for international artists and scholars, who attend the CAA Annual Conference

April Greiman, an innovative designer whose work with digital technology freed graphic design and typography from its reliance on the modernist grid, helping push an analogue profession into the digital realm, will speak at CAA’s upcoming Annual Members’ Business Meeting.

Born and raised in New York, Greiman attended the Kansas City Art Institute in Missouri. She completed graduate studies with the designers Armin Hoffman and Wolfgang Weingart at the Allgemeine Kunstgewerbeschule (General Arts Trade School) in Basel, Switzerland, an early 1970s hotbed for the emerging “new wave” aesthetic. Greiman’s early visual identity and publication projects—especially her experimental issue of Design Quarterly in 1986—were notable for their pioneering use of early Apple Macintosh computers and software, and for their radical combination of video and print technologies.

As head of the design studio Made in Space, Greiman consults in transmedia identity and architectural branding, and with color, surfaces, and materials. In the academic sphere, she has taught at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and the California Institute of the Arts, where she led the design program in the 1980s and served as chair of Visual Communications in the 1990s. She is the author of several books on design, including Hybrid Imagery: The Fusion of Technology and Graphic Design (1990) and Something from Nothing: Design Process (2001).

As a practicing fine artist, Greiman has produced work encompassing digital photography, video, installation design, and architecture. Her public projects in Los Angeles, where she has lived since 1976, include Poet’s Walk for Citicorp Plaza and the seven-story mural Hand Holding a Bowl of Rice at the entrance to the Wilshire Vermont Metro Station in Koreatown. Greiman’s digital photography and transmedia work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the School of Visual Arts in New York and the Pasadena Museum of California Art. Most recently, her work was included in the exhibition elles@centrepompidou at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Greiman has received numerous local, state, and national design awards, including a Hall Chair Fellowship from the Hallmark Corporation, a Gold Medal from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, a Chrysler Award for Innovation from the Chrysler Corporation, an AIGA Fellowship, and an American Institute of Architects Award.

CAA’s Annual Members’ Business Meeting will take place during the 100th Annual Conference on Friday, February 24, 2012, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at Los Angeles Convention Center.

Open House at CAA’s New Office

CAA invites members to attend a special Open House of the organization’s new office on Saturday, October 22, 2011, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM. The office is located at 50 Broadway, 21st Floor, New York, NY 10004.

Many CAA staffers will be on hand to give informal tours of the office and to answer questions about day-to-day work. Members of the Board of Directors, in town for its fall meeting taking place the next day, can talk to you about the larger issues CAA is facing.

The new office, which CAA has called home since July, is located in a rich historical district near Wall Street, Bowling Green, Battery Park, and Trinity Church. The National Museum of the American Indian and Arturo Di Modica’s famous bronze sculpture of the Charging Bull are both a stone’s throw away, and Zuccotti Park and Occupy Wall Street are a few blocks to the north.

The Appraisers Association of America, a CAA affiliated society, is extending a special discount to CAA members for an upcoming study trip to Marfa, Texas. The trip will take place from Friday, October 28, to Monday, October 31, 2011. The fee is $1,400 for CAA members ($1,500 for guests and nonmembers), which includes round-trip transportation from El Paso International Airport to Marfa, travel within Marfa, all meals, hotel for three nights, and all tour and entrance fees.

Marfa is home to the Chinati Foundation, a contemporary art museum based on the ideas of its founder, Donald Judd, whose intention was to preserve permanent large-scale installations by a limited number of artists and present them to the public. Also in Marfa is the Judd Foundation, founded by the artist to preserve and maintain his living and working spaces, libraries, and archives. The trip’s itinerary includes visits to both foundations and to local bookstores, cultural spaces, and galleries, including Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset’s Prada Marfa. Participants will also have plenty of time to wind down and enjoy the local fare.

Participants will fly to El Paso International Airport (at their own expense) and then travel to Marfa in private vans. The Hotel Paisano will provide the accommodations.
