2014 Conference Information and Registration Booklet

CAA has begun mailing Conference Information and Registration, which provides important details, instructions, and deadlines for attending and participating in the 102nd Annual Conference, to all individual and institutional CAA members. Nonmembers and those wanting a digital file now can download a PDF of the booklet. The conference will take place February 12–15, 2014, in Chicago.
Following sections on registration and CAA membership, Conference Information and Registration describes travel, lodging, and transportation options and explains the basic processes for candidates seeking jobs and employers placing classifieds and renting booths and tables in the Interview Hall. In addition, the publication lists topics for eleven Professional-Development Workshops. If you want to connect with former and current professors and students, consult the Reunions and Receptions page. The booklet includes paper forms for CAA membership, conference registration, workshops, special events, and mentoring enrollment.
The contents of Conference Information and Registration also appear on the conference website, which is being updated regularly between now and the February meeting. You may also choose to join CAA and register online.
Extended Deadline for 2015 Annual Conference Session Proposals

CAA invites individual members to propose a session for the 103rd Annual Conference, taking place February 11–14, 2015, in New York. Proposals should cover the breadth of current thought and research in visual art, art and architectural history, theory and criticism, pedagogical issues, museum and curatorial practice, conservation, and developments in technology. For full details on the submission process for the conference, please review the information published on the Chair a 2015 Annual Conference Session webpage.
The Annual Conference Committee welcomes session proposals from established artists and scholars, along with those from younger scholars, emerging and midcareer artists, and graduate students. Particularly welcome are proposals that highlight interdisciplinary work. Artists are especially encouraged to propose sessions appropriate to dialogue and information exchange relevant to artists.
The submission process for the 2015 conference is now open. In order to submit a proposal, you must be a current CAA member. Deadline extended to Tuesday, September 10, 2013.

NYC Undergraduate Residency Seeks Host Institution

The New York Center for Art and Media Studies (NYCAMS) offers a one-semester, sixteen-credit-hour undergraduate residency for visual artists, designers, and creative writers in New York. Our programs combine rigorous classroom study with internship and fieldwork experience, providing our students broad and competitive platforms for entering the arts professions. For eight years, NYCAMS has operated successfully as an off-campus program of Bethel University, serving over three hundred students from twenty-two partner institutions. However, current economic and enrollment challenges necessitate the search for a new host institution. NYCAMS is seeking administrative and fiscal oversight from a college or university with a vision for serving the next generation of young artists through interdisciplinary modes of instruction, collaborative models of learning, and dedicated professional mentorship. Extended Deadline for 2014 Conference Session Proposals

CAA has extended the deadline for session proposals for the 2014 Annual Conference in Chicago to Friday, September 14, 2012. Conference sessions cover the breadth of current thought and research in art, art and architectural history, theory and criticism, pedagogical issues, museum and curatorial practice, conservation, and developments in technology.
The 2014 program is shaped by four broad submission categories: Historical Studies, Contemporary Issues/Studio Art, Educational and Professional Practices, and Open Forms. For Open Forms, members may submit themed panels that feature alternative formats such as panel discussions or interviews, or even sessions that provide alternate speaking lengths, rather than the usual five speakers in twenty-minute presentations.

CAA extends special thanks to the supporters of the 100th Annual Conference and Centennial Celebration in Los Angeles. The Getty Foundation awarded CAA a generous grant to support the attendance and participation of twenty international art historians. The National Endowment for the Arts renewed its support of ARTspace, which is organized by CAA’s Services to Artists Committee and includes programming designed by artists for artists. CAA is grateful to the Broad Foundation for providing funding for complimentary Wi-Fi for the Student and Emerging Professionals Lounge and to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for granting travel fellowships for international conference participants. CAA would also like to thank Art in America, the official media sponsor, and American Airlines, the official conference airline, for their contributions.
This year’s Book and Trade Fair supporters were: Blick Art Materials at the Partner level and ARTstor, Intellect Books, Prestel Publishing, and Rizzoli International Publications at the Sponsor level. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art generously hosted the Centennial Reception, and Pearson presented a $1,000 prize to the recipients of the 2012 Distinguished Teaching of Art and Art History Awards. CAA is also grateful for support from the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites and from Art Platform—Los Angeles.

Propose a Paper or Presentation for the 2013 Annual Conference

The 2013 Call for Participation for the 101st Annual Conference, taking place February 13–16 in New York, describes many of next year’s programs sessions. CAA and the session chairs invite your participation: please follow the instructions in the booklet to submit a proposal for a paper or presentation. This publication also includes a call for Poster Session proposals and describes the eight Open Forms sessions.
Listing more than 120 panels, the 2013 Call for Participation was mailed to all individual and institutional members in late March; you can also download a PDF of the twenty-five-page document from the CAA website immediately.
The deadline for proposals of papers and presentations for the New York conference is May 4, 2012.
In addition to dozens of wide-ranging panels on art history, studio art, contemporary issues, and professional and educational practices, CAA conference attendees can expect participation from many area schools, museums, galleries, and other institutions. The Hilton New York in midtown Manhattan is the conference headquarters, holding most sessions, Career Services, the Book and Trade Fair, ARTspace, special events, and more. Deadline: May 4, 2012.

CAA Receives Getty Grant to Fund International Conference Travel

The Getty Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to CAA in support of international travel for twenty applicants to attend the 100th Annual Conference and Centennial Celebration, taking place February 22–25, 2012, in Los Angeles. Through the new CAA International Travel Grant Program, CAA will provide funds for travel expenses, hotel accommodations, per diems, and conference registrations. Recipients will also receive one-year CAA memberships. Applicants may be art historians, artists who teach art history, and art historians who are museum curators; those from developing countries or from nations not well represented in CAA’s membership are especially encouraged to apply.
The goal of the project is to increase international participation in CAA and to diversify the organization’s membership (presently sixty-five countries are represented). CAA also wishes to familiarize international participants with the submission process for conference sessions and to expand their professional network in the visual arts. Members of CAA’s International Committee have agreed to host the participants, and the National Committee for the History of Art will also lend support to the program.
CAA will publish an official call for grant applications on its website on Friday, July 8, 2011; the program will also be publicized in CAA News. A jury will select the twenty grant recipients.
