New Members of CAA Committees

CAA’s nine Professional Interests, Practices, and Standards Committees welcome their newly appointed members, who will serve three-year terms (2013–16). In addition, five new chairs will take over committee leadership, and several members of the CAA Board of Directors assume liaison posts. New committee members, chairs, and board liaisons will begin their terms at the 101st Annual Conference, to be held February 13–16, 2013, in New York. CAA warmly thanks all outgoing committee members for their years of service to the organization.
A call for nominations for these committees appears annually from July to September in CAA News and on the CAA website. CAA’s president, vice president for committees, and executive director review all nominations in November and make appointments that take effect the following February. CAA’s vice president for committees, DeWitt Godfrey of Colgate University, is an ex officio member of all nine groups.
New Committee Members, Chairs, and Board Liaisons
Committee on Diversity Practices: Julie L. McGee, University of Delaware; and Staci Scheiwiller, California State University, Stanislaus. The new board liaison is Leslie Bellavance of Alfred University, and the new committee chair is Susan D. Zurbrigg from James Madison University, replacing Kevin Concannon of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Committee on Intellectual Property: Kenneth Cavalier, University of British Columbia; Anne Norcross, Ferris State University; and Cynthia Underwood, United States Patent and Trademark Office. A new board liaison to the committee is Suzanne Preston Blier of Harvard University.
Committee on Women in the Arts: Rocío Aranda-Alvarado, El Museo del Barrio; Jonathan D. Katz, University at Buffalo, State University of New York; and Neysa Page-Lieberman, Columbia College Chicago. The new chair is Claudia Sbrissa of St. John’s University, taking over from Maria Elena Buszek of the University of Colorado in Denver.
Education Committee: Kirsten Ataoguz, Indiana University–Purdue University, Fort Wayne; Leda Cempellin, South Dakota State University; and Bertha Gutman, Delaware County Community College. After serving three years as committee chair, Rosanne Gibel of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale will be succeeded by Julia A. Sienkewicz of Duquesne University.
International Committee: Francesca Fiorani, University of Virginia; Federico Freschi, University of Johannesburg; Annelise Jarvis-Hansen, independent artist, Copenhagen; and Valérie Rousseau, American Folk Art Museum. Gail Feigenbaum of the Getty Research Institute joins the committee as board liaison.
Museum Committee: Jeffrey Abt, Wayne State University; Joseph Becherer, Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park; Makeda Best, University of Vermont; and Tracy Fitzpatrick, Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College, State University of New York. The new committee chair is N. Elizabeth Schlatter of the University of Richmond Museums, who takes over from Karol A. Lawson of Sweet Briar College.
Professional Practices Committee: Thomas Berding, Michigan State University; Virginia Maksymowicz, Franklin and Marshall College; and Jonathan F. Walz, Rollins College.
Services to Artists Committee: Michelle Grabner, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Jenny Marketou, independent artist, New York; Martha Schwendener, critic, Brooklyn; and Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, artist, Chicago.
Student and Emerging Professionals Committee: Jacquelyn N. Coutré, Adelphi University; Lauren Grace Kilroy, Brooklyn College, City University of New York; Carolyn Jean Martin, San Francisco Art Institute; and John Douglas Powers, University of Alabama, Birmingham. Megan Koza Mitchell-Young of the Dishman Art Museum at Lamar University succeeds Jennifer Stoneking-Stewart of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, as chair.
CAA Seeks Publications Committee Member

CAA invites nominations and self-nominations for one member at large to serve on its Publications Committee for a three-year term, July 1, 2013–June 30, 2016. Candidates, who must possess expertise appropriate to the committee’s work, may be artists, art historians, critics, curators, educators, or other professionals in the visual arts; institutional affiliation is not required.
Meeting three times a year, the Publications Committee is a consultative body that advises the CAA Publications Department staff and the CAA Board of Directors on publishing projects. It provides oversight for the editorial boards of The Art Bulletin, Art Journal, and caa.reviews, as well as the juries for CAA’s book grants; sponsors a practicum session at the Annual Conference; and, with the CAA vice president for publications, serves as liaison to the board, membership, editorial boards, book-grant juries, and other CAA committees.
The Publications Committee meets three times a year: twice in New York in the spring and fall and once at the CAA Annual Conference in February. CAA reimburses members for travel and lodging expenses for the two New York meetings in accordance with its travel policy, but members pay these expenses to attend the conference. Members of all CAA committees volunteer their services without compensation.
Candidates must be current CAA members and should not be serving on another CAA editorial board or committee. In addition, they may not be individuals who have served as members of a CAA editorial board within the past five years. Nominators should ascertain their nominee’s willingness to serve before submitting a name; self-nominations are also welcome. Appointments are made by the CAA president in consultation with the vice president for publications. Directory for Diversity Practices

CAA’s Committee on Diversity Practices would like to introduce the Directory for Diversity Practices and to invite CAA members to submit syllabi and recommend additional material for it. The Directory for Diversity Practices has been developed to provide a range of updated documents, texts, and links related to ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, disability, and aging for use in the classroom. It is accessible via the CAA website under the tab marked Resources.
The directory is divided into five user-friendly sections:

The Committee on Diversity Practices is dedicated to building a useful and evolving resource for teaching the visual arts and art history. CAA encourages you to visit the site and to let the committee know how it can add to the directory in order for it to be more useful. The committee regards this directory as a work in process and seeks comments and submissions (emails below) from the CAA community at large.
Submissions Guide
Suggestions for any of the five areas are welcome and will be added as appropriate. Material included in its entirety must be in the public domain, contributed by the authors or copyright owners who have given permission to publish it on the CAA website, and/or otherwise publicly available. Contributions should be relevant, applicable, and up to date. Older material will be selected on its continuing relevance.
The committee welcomes the submission of syllabi addressing issues and topics related to diversity and art. It hopes to significantly expand this section, which promises to be a valuable resource for anyone seeking current models for inclusive curricula. Kindly send your syllabus as a Word file. Please remove any references to the specific details of the class (dates, name of institution, office hours and location, etc.). Professors retain the copyright for their work.

December 2012–January 2013 Picks from CAA’s Committee on Women in the Arts

Each month, CAA’s Committee on Women in the Arts produces a curated list, called CWA Picks, of recommended exhibitions and events related to feminist art and scholarship in North America and around the world.
The CWA Picks for December 2012–January 2013 include several important exhibitions in the United States, England, and Sweden. In New York, Lehman Maupin Gallery is hosting a two-part presentation of new work by Mickalene Thomas, whose traveling survey at the Brooklyn Museum was a November pick. Other events in the city include a temporary performance and installation work by Ann Hamilton at the Park Avenue Armory and sculpture, painting, and drawing by Caroline Burton at Accola Griefen Gallery.
Midcareer retrospectives are trending: the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh is offering a look at painting by Deborah Kass in relation to the Pope of Pop, and the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York is showcasing Rosemarie Trockel’s mixed-media work. Across the Atlantic, Kate Davis has produced work in dialogue with Jo Spence at Drawing Room in London, and Tensta Konsthall in Stockholm is highlighting the full painting and film career of Marie-Louise Ekman.

Join the 2013–14 Nominating Committee

CAA invites you to help shape the future of the organization by serving on the 2013–14 Nominating Committee. Each year, this committee nominates and interviews potential candidates for the CAA Board of Directors and selects the final slate for the membership’s vote. The candidates for the 2013–17 board election were announced last month.
The current Nominating Committee will choose the new members of its own committee at its business meeting, to be held at the 2013 Annual Conference in New York in February. Once selected, all committee members must propose, in the spring, a minimum of five and a maximum of ten people for the board. Service on the committee also involves conducting telephone interviews with candidates during the summer and meeting in fall 2013 to select the final board slate. Finally, all Nominating Committee members attend their business meeting, at the Chicago conference in 2014, to select the next committee.
Nominations and self-nominations should include a brief statement of interest and a two-page CV. Please email a statement and your CV as Word attachments to the attention of DeWitt Godfrey, CAA vice president for committees, care of Vanessa Jalet. Deadline: January 4, 2013.
ARTexchange Seeks Participants

CAA’s Services to Artists Committee invites artist members to participate in ARTexchange, an open forum for sharing work at the 2013 Annual Conference. Free and open to the public, ARTexchange will be held on Friday, February 15, 5:30–7:30 PM, in a central location at the Hilton New York. A cash bar will be available.
ARTexchange is an annual event showcasing the art of CAA members, who can exhibit their paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and digital works using the space on, above, and beneath a six-foot folding table. Artists may also construct temporary mini-installations and conduct performance, sound, and spoken-word pieces in their space. In the past, many ARTexchange participants found the event to be their favorite part of the conference, with the table parameter sparking creative displays.
To be considered for ARTexchange in New York, please send your full name, your CAA member number, a brief description of the work you want to exhibit (no more than 150 words), and a link to your website to Lauren Stark, CAA manager of programs. Artists presenting performance or sound art, spoken word, or technology-based work, including laptop presentations, must add a few sentences about their plans. Accepted participants will receive an email confirmation. Because ARTexchange is a popular venue with limited space, early applicants will be given preference. Deadline: December 14, 2012.
Participants are responsible for their work; CAA is not liable for losses or damages. Sale of work is not permitted. Participants may not hang artworks on walls or run power cords from laptops or other electronic devices to outlets—bring fully charged batteries.

Practice Your Interviewing Technique in Mock Interview Sessions at the New York Conference

Students and emerging professionals have the opportunity to sign up for a twenty-minute practice interview at the 2013 Annual Conference in New York. Organized by the Student and Emerging Professionals Committee, Mock Interview Sessions give participants the chance to practice their interview skills one on one with a seasoned professional, improve their effectiveness during interviews, and hone their elevator speech. Interviewers also provide candid feedback on application packets.
Mock Interview Sessions are offered free of charge; you must be a CAA member to participate. Sessions are filled by appointment only and scheduled for Thursday, February 14, 10:00 AM–NOON and 4:00–6:00 PM; and Friday, February 15, 10:00 AM–NOON and 4:00–6:00 PM. Conference registration, while encouraged, is not necessary to participate.
To apply, download, complete, and send the Mock Interview Sessions form to Jennifer Stoneking-Stewart, chair of the Student and Emerging Professionals Committee. You may enroll in one twenty-minute session. Deadline extended: February 13, 2013.
You will be notified of your appointment day and time by email. Please bring your application packet, including cover letter, CV, and other materials related to jobs in your field. The Student and Emerging Professionals Committee will make every effort to accommodate all applicants; however, space is limited.
Onsite enrollment will be limited and first-come, first-served. Sign up in the Student and Emerging Professionals Lounge starting on Thursday, February 14, at 8:00 AM.
Call for Mock Interviewers at the Conference

For the 2013 Annual Conference in New York, the Student and Emerging Professionals Committee seeks established professionals to volunteer as practice interviewers for the Mock Interview Sessions. Participating as an interviewer is an excellent way to serve the field and to assist with the professional development of the next generation of artists and scholars.
In these sessions, interviewers pose as a prospective employer, speaking with individuals in a scenario similar to the Interview Hall at the conference. Each session is composed of approximately 10–15 minutes of interview questions and a quick review of the application packet, followed by 5–10 minutes of candid feedback. Whenever possible, the committee matches interviewers and interviewees based on medium or discipline.
Interested candidates must be current CAA members and prepared to give six successive twenty-minute interviews with feedback in a two-hour period on one or both of these days: Thursday, February 14, 10:00 AM–NOON and 4:00–6:00 PM; and Friday, February 15, 10:00 AM–NOON and 4:00–6:00 PM. Conference registration, while encouraged, is not required to be a mock interviewer. Desired for the sessions are art historians, art educators, designers, museum-studies professionals, critics, curators, and studio artists with tenure and/or experience on a search committee. You may volunteer for one, two, three, or all four Mock Interview Sessions.
Please send your name, affiliation, position, contact information, and the days and times that you are available to Jennifer Stoneking-Stewart, chair of the Student and Emerging Professionals Committee. Deadline extended: February 1, 2013.
The Mock Interview Sessions are not intended as a screening process by institutions seeking new hires.
November 2012 Picks from CAA’s Committee on Women in the Arts

Each month, CAA’s Committee on Women in the Arts produces a curated list, called CWA Picks, of recommended exhibitions and events related to feminist art and scholarship in North America and around the world.
The CWA Picks for November 2012 include several important exhibitions in New York, New Jersey, and Nebraska, and in Germany. The first is Creeping Ornamentalism, a prescient, timely installation by Susan Hamburger that focuses on the destruction caused by Hurricane Irene in 2011 in New Jersey, Vermont, and Massachusetts.
In New York, the Brooklyn Museum boasts two stellar shows, Materializing “Six Years”: Lucy R. Lippard and the Emergence of Conceptual Art and Mickalene Thomas: Origin of the Universe, and two commercial galleries are showing the work of Sandra Ramos and Penny Slinger. Out west, the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha is showing prints by numerous women artists in Under Pressure. Across the Atlantic, Kunstverein Hamburg presents Kiki Kogelnik: I Have Seen the Future.

Serve on a CAA Committee

Get involved in an issue that you care about! CAA invites members to apply for service on one of its nine Professional Interests, Practices, and Standards Committees. These committees address critical issues in the visual arts in an attempt to deal with, and respond to, the pressing concerns of CAA’s members.
Communicating via listserv throughout the year, each committee takes on the objectives it has set for itself, which include: programming ARTspace at the Annual Conference; establishing best practices, standards, and guidelines; sharing and examining pedagogical practices; examining new and developing technologies; addressing issues critical to emerging professionals as well as concerns of diversity and gender; extending the reach of CAA internationally; and clarifying and debating matters of fair use, copyright, and open access. This vigorous exchange of information reveals common goals and leads to solutions that will help CAA members to weather their changing professional landscape.
Committees are active at the Annual Conference in February, where each presents one or two sessions on a subject of its choosing. These sessions, sometimes collaborations between committees and sometimes dealing with workforce issues, are meant to be of immediate value to CAA members. Also at the conference, the committees hold face-to-face business meetings and discuss the past year’s accomplishments while targeting ideas for future projects. Participation on a committee is an excellent and fruitful way to network with other CAA members, and for some individuals it is a stepping-stone to service on the organization’s Board of Directors.
The public face of several CAA committees appears most visibly at the conference. The Services to Artists Committee, for example, conceives nearly all content and programming for ARTspace, ARTexchange, and the Media Lounge, while the Student and Emerging Professionals Committee organizes events on professional-development issues that take place in the Student and Emerging Professionals Lounge.
Online, the Committee on Women in the Arts publishes the monthly CWA Picks of exhibitions and events related to feminist art and scholarship, among other activities. Last year, the Museum Committee conducted a survey of museum-based members; it also advocates greater access to museum image collections. After conducting a survey of its own, the International Committee warmly welcomed and hosted twenty travel-grant recipients who attended the Los Angeles conference from around the world.
The Professional Practices Committee continues to study, develop, and revise CAA’s Standards and Guidelines, so that these documents, once approved by the CAA board, become authoritative, comprehensive documents for art-related disciplines. The Committee on Diversity Practices is compiling syllabi that consider diversity and inclusiveness in curricula and the classroom. The Committee on Intellectual Property completely updated all intellectual-property information on CAA’s website and continues to monitor the tricky terrain of copyright and fair use, which dramatically affects the work lives of artists and scholars.
Committee members serve three-year terms (2013–16), with at least one new member rotating onto a committee each year. Candidates must be current CAA members and possess expertise appropriate to the committee’s work. Members of all committees volunteer their services without compensation. Committee work is not for the faint of heart; it is expected that once appointed to a committee, a member will involve himself or herself in an active and serious way.
