CAA News Today

Interested in attending the 2016 Annual Conference but find the registration fees prohibitory? Working as a projectionist, room monitor, or registration attendant at this year’s event is a great way to save on conference expenses. All temporary workers who agree to twelve hours of work and a paid training meeting are given complimentary full-conference registration; they will also receive $12 per hour upon the completion of their shifts.

CAA is still accepting applicants for the following positions and shifts.

Registration Attendants

CAA seeks registration attendants to work in the registration area between Tuesday afternoon, February 2 and Saturday afternoon, February 6. Registration attendants are required to work a minimum of twelve hours, registering conference participants, checking membership statuses, and monitoring registration compliance in various session rooms. Registration attendant shifts are full-day shifts (8:00 AM–7:00 PM) and best for people who would like to complete their work commitment in a single day.

**Registration attendants must attend a training meeting on Tuesday afternoon, February 2, between 3:30 and 5:00 PM.

**Workers are still needed for shifts on Wednesday, February 3, 8:00 AM–7:00 PM, and Thursday February 4, 8:00 AM–7:00 PM.

Projectionists

CAA seeks projectionists to work in the various conference session rooms between Wednesday, February 3, and Saturday February 6. Projectionists are required to work a minimum of eleven hours and must be familiar with digital projectors and laptops.

**Projectionists must attend a training meeting on Wednesday morning, February 3, 7:30–8:30 AM.

**Many shifts still available between 9:30 AM and 5:00 PM on Thursday, February 4, and Friday, February 5.

Room Monitors

CAA seeks room monitors to work in the various conference session rooms between Wednesday, February 3, and Saturday February 6. Room monitors are required to work a minimum of eleven hours checking in session participants, monitoring membership compliance in various rooms, and taking attendance in the session rooms.

**Room monitors must attend a training meeting on Wednesday morning, February 3, 7:30–8:30 AM.

**Many shifts are still available between 9:30 AM and 5:00 PM on Thursday, February 4, and Friday, February 5.

The 2015 Nominating Committee has selected the following slate of six candidates for election to the CAA Board of Directors for the 2016-2020 term. Voting begins in early January 2016.     About the Board

The Board of Directors is charged with CAA’s long-term financial stability and strategic direction; it is also the Association’s governing body. The Board sets policy regarding all aspects of CAA’s activities, including publishing, the Annual Conference, awards and fellowships, advocacy, and committee procedures.

About the Election

CAA members may vote for no more than four (4) candidates (which may include one write-in candidate who must be a CAA member). The four candidates receiving the most votes will be elected to the Board. CAA members may cast their votes and submit their proxies online only. CAA holds the Board election on its own website. To vote, members will need only to log into their CAA member account.

All voting must take place prior to 5:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday, February 3, 2016. The results of the Board election will be announced at CAA’s Annual Business Meeting which is to be held at 5:30 p.m. EST at the start of Convocation at the Annual Conference in Washington on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 in the Marriott Ballroom, Salon 2, Lobby Level at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, 2660 Woodley Road, NW., Washington, D. caa.reviews invites nominations and self-nominations for individuals to join its Council of Field Editors, which commissions reviews within an area of expertise or geographic region, for a term ending June 30, 2018. An online journal, caa.reviews is devoted to the peer review of books, museum exhibitions, and projects relevant to art history, visual studies, and the arts.

The journal seeks field editors for books in the following subject areas: early modern Iberian and colonial Latin American art, Islamic art, design history, and museum studies and practice. The journal also seeks a field editor to commission reviews of exhibitions on the West Coast, pre-1800. Candidates may be artists, art or design historians, critics, curators, or other professionals in the visual arts; institutional affiliation is not required.

Working with the caa.reviews editor-in-chief, the editorial board, and CAA’s staff editor, each field editor selects content to be reviewed, commissions reviewers, and reviews manuscripts for publication. Field editors for books are expected to keep abreast of newly published and important books and related media in their fields of expertise, and field editors for exhibitions should be aware of current and upcoming exhibitions (and other related projects) in their geographic regions. The Council of Field Editors meets annually at the CAA Annual Conference. Field editors must pay travel and lodging expenses to attend the conference.

Candidates must be current CAA members and should not currently serve on the editorial board of a competitive journal or on another CAA editorial board or committee. CAA invites you to help shape the future of the organization by serving on the 2016–2017 Nominating Committee. Each year, this committee nominates and interviews potential candidates for the CAA Board of Directors and selects the final slate for the membership’s vote. The candidates for the 2016 Board of Directors election were announced on October 13, 2015.

The Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee strive to find the best candidates that represent the broad subdisciplines and practitioners represented in the membership. The 2015–2016 Nominating Committee will select the members of the 2016–2017 committee at its business meeting, to be held at the 2016 Annual Conference in Washington, DC in February. Once selected as members of the 2016–2017 committee, all members must propose, in the spring, a minimum of five and a maximum of ten people for the board. Service on the committee also involves conducting telephone interviews with candidates during the summer of 2016, and meeting in the fall to select the final board slate. Finally, all Nominating Committee members attend their next business meeting, at the 2017 Annual Conference in New York to select the succeeding committee.

Nominations and self-nominations should include a brief statement of interest and a 3–4 page condensed CV. CAA’s Student and Emerging Professionals Committee seeks established professionals to volunteer as practice job interviewers for the Mock Interview Sessions at the 2016 Annual Conference in Washington, DC. Participating as an interviewer is an excellent way to serve the field and to assist with the professional development of the next generation of artists and scholars.

In these sessions, interviewers pose as a prospective employer, speaking with individuals in a scenario similar to the Interview Hall at the conference. Each session is composed of approximately 10–15 minutes of interview questions and a quick review of the application packet, followed by 5–10 minutes of candid feedback. Whenever possible, the committee matches interviewers and interviewees based on medium or discipline.

Interested candidates must be current CAA members and prepared to give six successive twenty-minute interviews with feedback in a two-hour period on one of three days: Wednesday, February 3, 2:00–4:00 PM; Thursday, February 4, 11:00 AM–1:00 PM and 2:00–4:00 PM; and Friday, February 5, 9:00–11:00 AM. Interviewers should be art historians, art educators, designers, museum-studies professionals, critics, curators, and studio artists with significant experience in their fields or experience on a search committee. You may volunteer for one, two, three, or all four Mock Interview Sessions.

The president of CAA’s Board of Directors, DeWitt Godfrey, has made appointments to the editorships and editorial boards of CAA’s three scholarly journals, in consultation with the editorial boards and the vice president for publications, Gail Feigenbaum. The appointments took effect on July 1, 2015.

The Art Bulletin

Nina Athanassoglou-Kallmyer, professor emerita in the Department of Art History at the University of Delaware in Newark, has been appointed the next editor-in-chief of The Art Bulletin. She is a specialist in French art from the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries. In 2010 she published Théodore Géricault (Phaidon); other books have focused on Cézanne (University of Chicago Press, 2003) and Delacroix (Yale University Press, 1991). After a year as editor designate, Athanassoglou-Kallmyer will serve a three-year term, July 1, 2016–June 30, 2019. The March 2017 issue of The Art Bulletin will be her first issue. After her editorship, she will remain on the journal’s editorial board as past editor through June 30, 2020.

Two new at-large members have joined the Art Bulletin Editorial Board: Jonathan Reynolds is a scholar of modern Japanese art and architecture and a professor of art history at Barnard College and Columbia University in New York; Michael Schreffler, a specialist in early modern Latin American art, is an associate professor of art history at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Their terms run through June 30, 2019.

Art Journal

Kirsten Swenson, an assistant professor of art history, contemporary art, and aesthetics at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell, has been appointed reviews editor of Art Journal. Two books of her work will publish later this year: Irrational Judgments: Eva Hesse, Sol LeWitt, and 1960s New York (Yale University Press) and, coedited with Emily Eliza Scott, Critical Landscapes: Art, Space, Politics (University of California Press). Swenson is serving as reviews editor designate for one year before her three-year term begins on July 1, 2016. Her first commissioned reviews will appear in the Spring 2017 issue.

Talinn Grigor, an associate professor of fine arts at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, is a new member of the Art Journal Editorial Board. Her area of expertise is modern and contemporary global art and architecture, with a focus on the art of Iran. Her term runs through June 30, 2019.

caa.reviews

The caa.reviews Editorial Board welcomes one new member-at-large, Ben Davis, an independent author and critic residing in New York. Davis is national art critic for Artnet News and the author of 9.5 Theses on Art and Class (Haymarket Books, 2013). He will serve on the editorial board for a four-year term, through June 30, 2019.

New field editors of book reviews for the journal are: Gwen Allen, associate professor of art history at San Francisco State University in California, as field editor for artists’ books and books for artists; Lisa Florman, professor and chair of the Department of History of Art at Ohio State University in Columbus, as field editor for twentieth-century art; Angela Vanhaelen, associate professor of art history at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, as field editor for northern European art; and Helen Westgeest, assistant professor of modern and contemporary art history and of theory of photography at Leiden University in Leiden, the Netherlands, as field editor in photography.

New field editors for exhibition reviews are: Susan Best, professor of art history for the Queensland College of Art at Griffith University in South Bank, Australia, as field editor for modern and contemporary exhibitions in Australia and New Zealand; Natilee Harren, assistant professor of contemporary art history and critical studies in the School of Art at the University of Houston in Texas, as field editor for exhibitions in the Southwest; and Susan Richmond, associate professor of art history at Georgia State University in Atlanta, as field editor for exhibitions in the Southeast.

Committee on Diversity Practices

The Committee on Diversity Practices supports the development of global perspectives on art and visual culture. The committee promotes artistic, curatorial, scholarly and institutional practices that deepen appreciation of political and cultural heterogeneity, as educational and professional values. To that end, the committee assesses and evaluates the development and implementation of curricular innovation, new research methods, curatorial and pedagogical strategies, and hiring practices that contribute to the realization of these goals.

The Committee on Intellectual Property monitors and interprets copyright legislation for the benefit of CAA’s various constituencies. Committee on Women in the Arts

The Committee on Women in the Arts (CWA) promotes the scholarly study and recognition of women’s contributions to the visual arts and to critical and art-historical studies; advocates for feminist scholarship and activism in art; develops partnerships with organizations with compatible missions; monitors the status of women in the visual-arts professions; provides historical and current resources on feminist issues; and supports emerging artists and scholars in their careers.

Education Committee

The Education Committee promotes the visual arts as essential human activity; as a creative Endeavor and subject of cultural and historical inquiry and critical appreciative activity, and encourages excellence in teaching at all levels. Its focus is on pedagogy at the higher education level in art history, visual culture, studio, aesthetics, and art criticism, and on the interface between arts teaching and learning research and practice.

International Committee

The International Committee seeks to foster an international community of artists, scholars and critics within CAA; to provide forums in which to exchange ideas and make connections; to encourage engagement with the international student community; to develop relationships between CAA and organizations outside the United States with comparable goals and activities; and to assist the CAA Board of Directors by identifying and recommending advocacy issues that involve CAA and cross national borders.

Museum Committee

The Museum Committee provides a bridge between scholars and arts professionals in the academic and museum fields. It offers a forum for the discussion of issues of mutual interest and promotes museum advocacy issues within CAA. The committee lends support and mentorship for both seasoned and emerging professionals to protect and interpret the arts within museums.

Professional Practices Committee

The Professional Practices Committee responds to specific concerns of the membership in relation to areas such as job placement and recruitment, tenure and promotion procedures, scholarly standards and ethics, studio health and safety, and artists’ practices. The Professional Practices Committee also oversees CAA’s Standards and Guidelines.

Services to Artists Committee

The Services to Artists Committee (SAC) was formed by the CAA Board of Directors to seek broader participation by artists and designers in the organization and the Annual Conference. SAC identifies and addresses concerns facing artists and designers; creates and implements programs and events at the conference and beyond; explores ways to encourage greater participation and leadership in CAA; and identifies ways to establish closer ties with other arts professionals and institutions. To this end, committee members are responsible for the programming of ARTspace and its related events.

Student and Emerging Professionals Committee

Established in February 1998, the Student and Emerging Professionals Committee is comprised of CAA members who are students, recent graduates, and experienced arts professionals with the intention of better representing students and emerging professionals within the larger CAA and academic framework.

In the past year the Committee on Diversity has addressed how CAA as an association can positively address diversity awareness, training and implementation and developed a site for resources on diversity practices: http://www.collegeart.org/diversity/; the Committee on Intellectual Property has organized conference sessions on the new Fair Use Code and maintains a resource cite on intellectual property: http://www.collegeart.org/ip/; the Committee on Women in the Arts provides CWA Picks: http://www.collegeart.org/committees/picks and supports scholarship on women in the arts; the Education Committee has organized conference panels on issues in education; the International Committee promotes interactions between scholars on a global basis and has supported the CAA/Getty International Travel program that brings international scholars to the annual conference; the Museum Committee focuses on the history and theory of art museums and academia and has initiated a new project—Resources for Academic Art Museum Professionals that has support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; the Professional Practices Committee updates and develops guidelines for the profession; Services to Artists Committee plans and organizes ArtSpace at the annual conference that presents prominent artists and designers, discussions on artist/designer concerns from safety in the workplace to professional development; the Student and Emerging Professionals Committee organizes panels related to emerging professionals and holds mentoring and mock job interviews at the conference. All committees are seeking new members with expertise in these areas.

This year the Board of Directors has established a Task Force on Committees to strengthen and streamline the important work of CAA’s nine Professional Interest, Practices and Standards committees. The nine PIPS committees are working with the Task Force to determine the future focus and structure of the committees with the goal of better serving the visual arts field.

At the Annual Conference in February each committee presents one or two sessions on a subject related to their committee charge.

Committee members serve three-year terms (2016–2019), with at least one new member rotating onto a committee each year. Candidates must be current CAA members and possess expertise appropriate to the committee’s work. Members of all committees volunteer their services without compensation. Committee work is not for the faint of heart; it is expected that once appointed to a committee, a member will involve himself or herself in an active and serious way.

The following vacancies are open for terms beginning in February 2016:

CAA’s president, vice president for committees, and executive director review all candidates in the fall and make appointments in December, prior to the Annual Conference. New members are introduced to their committees during their respective business meetings at the conference.
